Personally I could never get into Sonic games. Any of them.

I have Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and Adventure right here for my Mega Drive and DreamCast, all bought during their times but never fully played. Also have Lost World since recently because of MK8's promotion, but the incentive to choose it as my free game wasn't really for the game itself, rather my curiosity for it's DLC. They're all hardly played, I can't even remember what Adventure plays like at all... I also played Sonic '06 briefly on a 360 of a friend of mine, but let's not get into that game.

I've always found the Rings-mechanic to be flawed, and the design of the levels in the games themselves to be counterproductive to the aim of speedy platforming. The lay-out, the obstacles and the enemies just never seem to match it for the most part. In fact, Super Mario 3D World contains several levels that are better at this speedy platforming concept than I think any Sonic game (I played) has ever been.

But, to say the first game or the series is overrated, no.

The game, the series and especially the character definitely have their place in videogame history, and it deserves it's recognition.
