I think that it'll be replaced next year or at the end of 2016 with a new home console.

3DS is actually pretty old, it's about 3 1/2 years old and isn't the same level of success that the DS was.

In other words its past middle age already, what's happening to the 3DS is just normal. 

I'd love (looooove) an Advance Wars 3DS though, please make one even if its eShop only Nintendo. 

This is why Nintendo Fusion would be a good idea. Nintendo can't support 2 systems at once.. Sony can't either so it just happens.

I don't see it as a major issue though. 3DS owners have a plentiful library, give Wii U owners something to play now.

I don't think so. Not only the DS games are still selling well, but the only direct copetitor, the Vita, is not doing great and it wil probably not get a succesor. In the handhelds departent, 3DS runs unopposed (mobile and tablet hurt sales but don't compete directly). The only thing that Nintendo needs is to keep the games coming. I don't see the HDS (an HD-DS, it will be called that) before 2/2 2017 or 1/2 2018.

Ok if you want to believe they won't release another handheld for 4 more years go right ahead.

Sounds like a number of you completely missed the large amount of time Nintendo spent on STEAM, which is a replacement for Advance Wars.

Beyond that, Smash and the new Pokemon, expect another Zelda title (I'd expect MM3D) to be announced soon for next year. Japan's also getting DQX and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate here and there. There should be some very strong content next year for 3DS, then the successor will be announced. A 2016 release is quite possible.

I think it's just the opposite. 3DS is selling well alone now (rivaling the PS4), thus they didn't needed to announce much for it this E3. I think Nintendo wanted to keep the focus on the Wii U, since it's the device who needs more help right now.

This may also indicate that they are guarding ammunition to show in the future, as they're probably aiming to give a long life to the portable.

I have another question: since when did Nintendo ever show much for handhelds at E3? I also felt as if handheld announcements happened throughout the year and much closer to release dates, than Nintendo's homeconsole ones.

I don't think they are trying to kill it, they are just stupid. Nintendo thinks the 3DS is doing perfect. They think the 3DS is selling well enough to not get constant support. And, because of this, they moved on to supporting the Wii U; an already dead, hopeless console that has no life ahead of it. (Even though Nintendo thinks so.)

The answer is, Nintendo is stupid.
