Maybe Nintendo could bring back some things like Nintendo Sports too and just support the platform primarily on their own. Make money off the games and expand the Amiibo into the biggest toy line out there.

I'm not sure how. You either buy one or the other or if you really want to you buy both. If you want to have your Nintendo games on the go then you get the portable, if you want them at home you get the console, if you want both you get both. I assume there would be some kind of cross buy for both. I don't get the logic that having the same games on both platforms somehow cancels out each other or something. |
You still don't understand ... *sigh*
Both platforms having the same games gives customers no incentive to buy the other platform just like how Xbox One having almost the same games as the PS4 gives no incentive to buy the Xbox One.

You don't understand that that's not an issue as long as people buy one of them since they're both Nintendo products. Not only that but it might get people that wouldn't buy any Nintendo console at all to buy one or the other as wel.

Exactly.

It is an issue as it will mean one platform cannibalizing the other ...
Nintendo will have settle with one platform doing good rather than both platforms succeeding much like the WII and DS ...

Then stop trying to sell people two hardware platforms. It's actually become a very expensive proposition that Nintendo is asking of consumers -- please spend $170 for out handheld and then spend another $300+ for our home console just to play the Mario/Zelda/Pokemon/DKC games you want.
We actually shouldn't be that surprised that a lot of people seem to be tiring of it. Go back to the basics that Mr. Yamauchi started with ... sell the hardware at cost and make money off the games and now you can also score with the Amiibo toys.
An affordable Nintendo platform that has all their games in one place instead of divided into two could also probably entice a lot of fence sitters who don't want to buy an entire platform just 3-4 Nintendo games alone per year.

It might cannibalize within a certain group of people, but with a console that gets more support than the usual nintendo console and/or handheld, you'll get more people to buy into the ecosystem as it will be more attractive.

It's not as bad as you think it is seeing as how a lot of people are willing to own multiple platforms as long as there are games that customers are willing to buy. Don't you understand that Software sells hardware ?
@Bold I'm pretty sure that started off being Sony's idea ...

Well that was a random insult...

"Software sells hardware" is such a blanket statement that really it's not accurate anymore. Every gaming platform has software, and in most cases plenty of it (eventually anyway).
Software variety and a healthy, continual flow of software are just as important if not moreso.
I think in general the trend in electronics today is all about having less hardware too. People don't want to buy more crap than they need, it's all about having centralized devices that give people the entertainment they want, when they want it, how they want it, without making them jump through hoops.
And sweet jeezus at the "Sony's idea" bit, you kids need to read up on gaming history.
