Sony is struggling financially and Yoshida already said to expect less AAA games on ps4. Yoshida is happy with the indie games, so expect those to be the focus of the console moving forward.

No he wasn't referring to the PS4. He was talking about the Vita.

Do not feed. He knows that.

Thanks jlmurph!

I think their most urgent priority is to improve the studios they already own! GG and Sucker Punch are the best examples. They have a lot of talent, and do many things right, but they make okay or decent games, not great games.

Their biggest flaws are the skills of good storytelling, dialogue, and character development. If one of these companies got someone like Amy Hennig? Man, I would love to play a game from that studio. But until Sony adds more talent to these teams that can contribute in these areas, GG and SP will continue to fail at exceeding a quality cap of "pretty good".

If sony needs more studios "badly",vwhat is MS situation?

MS has money :)

They bought Ryse, Dead Rising 3, Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive, and hired Playground to make Forza Horizon 2, as well as Double Helix for KI.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I remember in 2012 for example PS3 cranked out exclusive after exclusive. Sorcery, Wonderbook, Starhawk, LBP Karting, PS All Stars, Twisted Metal, Tokyo Jungle, R&C: Full Frontal Assault, Killzone HD, R&C Collection, Jak & Daxter Collection,

Most if not all were sales flops. All outsold by Halo 4 alone. GREAT for forum nuts bragging online, but terrible for PS financials. Too much is overkill and they tend to cannibalize each other in the end.

Frankly Sony is smart to take it easy this time around. But fortunately, PS4 can stay #1 on 3rd party multiplats alone.

During our conversation about PS4, Yoshida also talked about the relative lack of big Sony-published games slated for Sony's console this fall. Drivecluband LittleBigPlanet 3 are coming, and an even-more-HD edition of the acclaimed The Last of Uswill be out by then, but that's not exactly a full line-up of blockbuster, so-called AAA games.

"We've been saying that the number of AAAs might be getting smaller because the cost of development for AAAs is getting higher," he said. "But there are so many indie games and great games coming out almost every week or every other week. We're seeing it on PS4. I hope you're seeing it as well."

yeah but... with what money. Really the PS4 is the only thing doing well for them. The rest are mediocre of tanking and by this time next year, it is hard to see what the PS4 is going to be doing because consoles as a whole are tanking as well.

I don't think you know what the word "tanking" means. Consoles might not be doing as good as they used to (I honestly don't know either way) but they're far from tanking.

um... yeah they are.  With the consoles all reletively new on the market and they are all not doing great now. it is only going to get worse. I'd call that tanking

Xbox one and PS4 are doing better than they did last generation so your only talking about Nintendo which was an anonmally last generation as it is.

Times have changed.  Shock horror.

For example, I saw you earlier say that downloadable games don't really count.  Fine.  SOE are bringing Planetside 2 to PS4 (which is already on PC).  Doesn't count?  Okay, you're entitled to your opinion.  But I'm much happier SOE are bringing stuff like that to PS4 than the tat like Untold Legends that they brought to PS3.  It may have been an exclusive and a retail title, but it wasn't much good.

It's kind of inevitable that this happened really.

And I don't think Sony needs more studios.  I was pretty gutted when they shut teams like Studio Liverpool, but in the past few years Sony have made so many mid-tier games and haven't advertised any of them (Puppeteer; Sly 4; Ratchet Nexus; Starhawk; Twisted Metal etc.)  I personally was a massive fan of this kind of stuff and bought all of them, but I'm clued up on these kind of things.  The majority of the public aren't, and they were kinda pissing money away releasing them and getting poor sales because no-one knew they were coming out.

That's the difference with Sony now.  Fewer titles, but bigger titles.  It may not be to my personal tastes, but it's probably better for them as a whole.  They can still push smaller stuff as downloadable titles, or slot a few in here and there to their schedule (i.e. Ratchet Redux).

"It's very fortunate that the indie boom happened and they are providing lots of great content to Vita," he said. " Gameplay, game mechanic wise, people want to spend 10 minutes, 15 minutes getting in and out. On Vita, it's great with suspended functionality, so these indie games really great for that from a game design standpoint.

"Instead of watching big stories or cinematics, you can spend hours on Vita. So, I think that's actually the biggest star to help provide great content to Vita going forward. And we continue to make games cross-platform games, especially on digital side."

Do you think the Vita then will be getting fewer first-party games, I asked.

"I would say, yes, that's correct," Yoshida said.

Yeah. It's a bummer because those are my favorite too. Probably why I'm so partial to the Vita with all its B - AA tier Japanese games + stuff like Tearaway.

I think a poster earlier on in the thread hit the nail right on the head: Sony eventually realized they were producing more games than they could afford to advertise for, and that it was finally becoming a problem.

Does anybody remember back in 2006, 07 and early 08 when ps3 was NOTORIOUS for having "NO GAEMS"? (Shout out to Badgenome!) Well let's take a look at how the PlayStation 4 is doing exclusive-wise compared to what the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 did by the end of their first full years exclusive-wise.

PS2:

2000 = Fantavision, NFL Gameday 2001, NCAA Final Four 01, NCAA Gamebreaker 01

01 = ATV Off Road Fury, NBA Shootout 2001, Dark Cloud, Cool Boarders 2001, Twisted Metal Black, Gran Turismo 3: A-spec, Extermination, ICO, Formula 1 2001, Okage: Shadow King, Kinetica, NCAA Final Four 02, Frequency, NFL Gameday 02, Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy

Total PS2 Exclusives = 19 Exclusives

PS3:

06 = Resistance Fall Of Man, Genji: Days Of The Blade, NBA 07, Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom

07 = Formula 1: Championship Edition, Motorstorm, Warhawk, Lair, Heavenly Sword, NBA 08, Folklore, Eye Of Judgement, Ratchet & Clank: Tools Of Destruction, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune

Total PS3 Exclusives = 14 Exclusives

PS4:

2013 = Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack

2014 = Infamous: Second Son, MLB 14: The Show, Driveclub, Little Big Planet 3, BloodBorne

Total PS4 Exclusives = 7 Exclusives

Read it & wheep!

WTF is going on at Sony? You have all these studios but where are the games?!?

It's like seeing a big muscle bound dude who lifts weights but doesn't know how to fight. All that buffness for no reason..

..sh!t is ridiculous!

Why cant you just rekindle that flame that made PS fans become fans in the 1st place?

Whatever..

So what's going on with Sony? Do you think Sony needs more studios? Am i just losing my mind and being a negative nancy? or could i be on to something here?

Let me know in the comments below

Every generation is like this for Sony man.  The first full year isn't good, but it isn't terrible either with around 2-4 good exclusives.  Then from years 2-4 they pump out around 4-6 big exclusives a year and drown gamers in great games.

Hell the 360 alone survived on around 2-3 exclusives a year its entire life...

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.
