I think the problem is that it is too slow paced for a game which is popular because of how fast paced it is. The puzzle solving seems more fit for a lego game... Sonic Lego Wii U confirmed

The genesis games were not that fast paced compared to most of their 3D games.

The genesis games were not that fast paced compared to most of their 3D games.

That's not really a fair comparison though. The speed is also pretty spectacular on Genesis if you play right.
