Mean question, its like asking a parent to choose between their children. I love them both equally. Smash is so competitive when you go up against someone who knows the game, but then Mario Kart is so democratic in that anybody can pick it up and have fun. It really is a tough one.
But that said, I voted Smash, because I remember when I first played the original:
I'd have been 12 and I remember reading about it my Nintendo magazine and then the next weekend I had friend over for a sleep over and, as always with sleep overs, my Mum rented us a game to play. I asked for Smash as the review looked good, and we stayed up until about 1am playing it.
It then got rented every weekend until I got it for Christmas (it came out mid-November, so it was only a few weeks of rentals). Basically it was one of the first games that I fell in love with in such a big way.
Smash Bros, but only because Melee is that much of a legendary game!

Before this year, I probably would have given it to Smash Bros. But after Mario Kart 8, I feel it has to go to Nintendo's kart racing series. MK8 is just too good.
That being said, I've excited to see what Smash offers next.

Yep, not every Nintendo fan worships that series like it's the cure for cancer. ;)
Mario Kart.
I don't even like racing games, I just like Mario Kart. Pretty much the other way around with Smash. However I don't 'like' fighting games as much as I 'dislike' racing games and I relatively like Mario Kart more as a racing game than I dislike Smash as a fighting game.

I don't even see how there's a comparison. Smash is such a short series, Brawl was decent at best, and its best release was 13 years ago.
Mario Kart, meanwhile, has been around for a long time, repeatedly gets great release after great release, and is consistently improving. It's also not crazy overhyped.

This.
Oh but, yeah, Smash I'd have to say. Back then, I rented Smash Bros. for N64 every single time. I'd get sad if it wasn't available for rental after school. My mom never wanted to buy it for me because it was "too expensive". Still, after saying that, she bought like 5 different games....but no Smash Bros. It was funny seeing as how sometimes the last person who rented it had erased all data and it would make me obtain every single character and the secret stage again. It was a lot of fun, though.
Oh, and I co-founded what seems to be the first competitive smash league in the area (or maybe the whole city). Never in my life had I thought that competitive plays in Smash Bros. could be so much fun, particularly in Melee.
And funny enough, Smash U/3DS is now a crossover Nintendo game that features mascots from 4 well-known companies, making Mario, Mega Man, Pac-Man and Sonic fight in the same screen quite a display of...uh...dominance? Or was it fun? Meh, it's not important. Off-topic, at most.
