The original is my absolute favorite game of all time. In fact, I would almost stay that the series has gotten progressively worse (while still being excellent) since its inception. I would say there have been some slight bumps for ALttP being better in some ways that Zelda 2, and OoT being a real highlight though losing some great aspects from the 2D days.

Link to the Past is rare game I've bought three times and felt was worth it every time. Just a brilliant game that stands even today as example of game design.
