Mario is over-saturated that said ... if there was to be another Mario spin-off that turned into a blockbuster IP, the often speculated about "Mario Paintball" would probably be it. That said I'm happy they went with it as a new IP.

I still think they could very easily have Mario DLC/Amiibo features for this game where you can unlock a Mario FLUDD mode or have Mario characters in the game as a side-option.

So just put him in a Blooper suit.

I don't think that's it.  Nintendo has other studios it could rely on to make something like that.  Not all of Nintendo's IPs are bright, colorful and happy games.  

I don't think they expect all those CoD shooter type people to go over, but they probably do think it would attract those who are into that kind of gaming in general.  Nintendo also already gets ridiculed for many things so it wouldn't be anything new for them.  

Theres always going to be some people who will complain no matter what...that doesn't mean that the style is bad, it just means that they are shallow and small minded. Theres no reason to worry about those people...

I'd say smart. Now people can't lump it in and add it to a list of Mario games as if it were the same thing as the 3D platformers like they do with Kart and even Smash Bros.

Anything that keeps me from having to read a million posts that say "Oh look, another Mario game" is best in my eyes.

Nintendo has been insulting us with that tactic for YEARS now (Dinosaur Planet and Donkey Konga I'm looking in your direction). I'm so glad they're finally creating new IP again.

It's better for Nintendo to build new IPs not connected with the Mario world. In any case, Splatoon's characters are really ugly.
