Consoles are not phones. Console sales will die if the generations are short. Phones are necessities, Consoles are luxuries. Cutting the gens short would be idiotic.

I'm surprised that people actually believe next gen we will see conventional consoles. 

All the signs point to virtual consoles in the 9th generation, fully absorbed into the PC space.

I expect this last generation to be long if not the longest, if the advent of cloud and gaikai are to be believed.

The PS4 will probably go through at least 3 redesigns until the PS5 is a microconsole of some sort that excels in streaming.

With costs the way they are and the masses already largely happy with even 7th gen stuff, I think a 5 year cycle is unrealistic to expect. It's a business, they have to make a profit, and basically all of the profit lies towards the end of the cycle. 6-7 years is much more likely.

Just as I have said before.....

The PS5 and XBox2(?) will simply be upgraded versions of this generation. Faster CPU/GPU with 16GB of Ram... DDR5(6) for both. It will run all X1 and PS4 games. It will be more like PC as far as upgrade works. New games will have 2 MODES.. Normal mode and Ultra Mode. Ultra will be for the PS5 and X2 only and will run games at 4K resolution. Might even be possible the games will STILL play on X1 and PS4 .. just in normal mode at 1080p or less.

These consoles will still maintain optical drives for those who want to play older games.. but will also offer disc-less version for the all digital crowd.

Could easily see these hit the market in less then 5 years.. Since its not a HARD transition like this generation.. They will simple stop making the PS4 and X1 and the new consoles will be all that is available.

Consoles releasing every 5 years would kill the industry. This isn't the 90s anymore. Development and marketing costs are huge and games are either released unfinished (Battlefield 4) or delayed (Arkham Knight).

Look at these development costs. (I didn't include marketing.)

...I don't see how we can jump up from sub-1080 for a lot of games to a 4K resolution like that.

Huh? Its just like playing a game today on a PC..   A PC with integreated graphics may only output that game at barely 1080p... where a Nvidia high end graphics card will push the same game at 4k..     

If the PS4 keeps outselling the X1 two-to-one, it would not surprise me to see MS launch a new console in a few years.

They have yet to show how they're going to boost the power of the X1 with the cloud, if they make some huge cloud showing at E3 tomorrow then they wont need new hardware for years to come, if at all.

Make the next Console cloud-only, then it can follow me around everywhere on my laptop/tablet combo :).
