...has sold-through more than 4 million copies in its first week, positioning it as the best-selling new IP at launch across the video game industry*

*based on NPD and GFK data and internal estimates as of June 3, 2014

Seems clear to me they are referring to both the 4m figure and beig no. 1.

That's because you're assuming it. I'm assuming that they're talking about it being the best selling new IP using the historical data the two services offer.

They don't need to estimate how many units they've shipped they know exactly. They are using NPD figures for other new IP's sales, and their own internal estimates (which they get from retailers like us who order more shipments based on our sales) to figure out it was the best selling new IP.

I know they don't need to estimate that because shipments are directly trackable and typically only available to the publisher unless given out during financials. For the rest of it, that's exactly what I said.

That sentence is pretty clearly formulated, but if you get a different idea from it we'll just have to disagree.

I've never seen a company use sold-through and mean shipped. Sold-through literally means sold to consumers. The term for shipped is sold-in (or just sold). Maybe you have some examples of sold-through being used for shipped, I don't know.

In any case, this game has outpaced ACIII (their previous record), which sold 3.1m week one on PS3 and X360.

So yes, this game has sold 4m copies, unless they sold 3.2m and just shipped 4m, which is very doubtful and would make the game impossible to find now.

I'm telling you, Sony totally has done it before at least.  I remember a whole big thing about "Sold through... to our customers, why would we mention end user sales in a release."

So it's not inconceivable, outside which, where are you even getting the NPD and internal data info from?

I don't see it on the blog, is there a different release i'm missing?  (Pet peve of mind... when articles don't quote the source.)

Past history tells us to not trust publishers for number of games sold at retail, so I'll continue to doubt until I see a tracking service announce it.

So if Watch Dogs has sold 4 million to retailers and not to consumers, do you believe the same is true for MK8's 1.2 million unit sales? I'd like to believe you do.

I believe they're absolutely the same. There are very instances where shipped numbers can be equated to sold, and that's for sellouts (PS4 at launch and a few after and the Wii in its first few years, etc).

The attempts to downplay and minmimize this game and its success has been one of the sadder things I have witnessed in gamer recently. A new IP doing well is good for the industry, I am convinced many of you would rather the industry collapse in the name of console wars.

I don't remember sony ever using "sold through" meaning shipped. They used to just say "sold". And even if they used it doesn't mean Ubi is using like that as well, and assuming they are is quite a leap of faith since 99% of the time the industry use "sold through" to indicate sales to final consumers.

Anyway, increadible sales for the game. If UK sales are representative the game sold between 3.7x and 7x what Mario Kart 8 sold.

i think 6th jun, so in 2 days. i think.

So we're looking at at least 1.5m for the PS4. That's a massive first week for a console barely 7-8 months old. Very impressive
