Forums - Microsoft - Windows 9 Will Unify PC, Xbox, Phone, and Tablet OSes

Eugh why do i have the feeling we will end up with a jack of all trades master of none set of unified OSs. With another compromised UX for the sake of a unified UX across platforms with completely different uses and IO devices.

At least it looks like they are moving in the right direction for the desktop.

Will it suck as much/have the same shitty format as Windows 8? In that case, no thanks.

Still trying to figure out what is wrong with Windows 8. Uses less resources then Windows 7, faster to start, faster to close, faster to find things, just faster, faster faster. If you dont want to use Metro apps boot to desktop. Pin your apps to the task bar (been doing that even prior to Windows 8). I find the oh switch between start screen and desktop is to jarring argument to be hysterical. Oh my eyes. Then they go from website to website with totally different designs and have no problem.

There is nonthing wrong with it at all. Windows 8 to me is the best OS Microsoft has ever made. Just like you said it does everything faster and is more stable. If it booted up to desktop and had a start menu like Windows 7 we would not be having these discussions.

havnt they said the same about windows 8?

and how they will combine RT and normal windows? or is it the end for arm windows tabs?

Like I said total non issues. To have a much more stable fast OS and not have a start menu when most of the time you really dont need it or use it.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

The only significant different in performance is boot and shutdown.  Otherwise the differences are negligible.  It's certainly not easier to find things.  Windows 7 is very stable, so that's a non-issue.

The new interface just sucks for PCs, which is why nobody is buying it.  I've got 7 on my laptop and 8 on my wife's laptop.  I can't stand working on her machine, even though it's a touchscreen.

As for Windows 9, we'll see.

Microsoft Please.

W9 could be the OS that the world needs right now.

But this unification thing, it seems like I'm missing the point more and more and I find myself being uncomfortably comfortable with UNIX oses

In this day and age, with the Internet, ignorance is a choice! And they're still choosing Ignorance! - Dr. Filthy Frank

Great idea, poor execution: Microsoft will be what it's always been, and more people will continue to switch to Mac and Linux.

This was announced since August last year.
Interesting to see how it works. The reporter whose article I read was a lot more level headed.

I thought streamlining the OS would be the way forward but what do I know.

They were the first to unify with word processing, spread sheets, desktop publishing, etc. You used to have to learn how to do things for each one. Like underlining might be one command or colour on one, a different one on another. It was tedious and cumbersome.

Word Perfect was the undisputed King of word processing. Microsoft came along with Works and their Office software and you would do the same thing in Word as you would Excel, Outlook, Power Point, etc. It greatly enhanced the user experience. They killed Word Perfect with Word. Almost nobody used WP anymore, anywhere.

Some of you may remember Real Player, Load TV, etc. When just trying to get a window to open or close was a pain. Every software had it's own way of doing things and you ended up with mystery meat navigation. It was awful.

Now, They are not only combining the user level integration, but the behind the scenes too. Everything is going 64 bit only, DirectX 12, etc. I think for the greatest part this will only enhance productivity and efficiency. It's also the first Real behind the scenes change for PC since Vista. (Window 7 is just Vista.1, Windows 8 and 8.1 are just gussied up Windows 7, etc.)

Bring it on!

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.
