Who'd you get?

We got Inter, tough battle that. Should best the other 2 hopefully.

MANCHESTER UNITED, Fenerbahce and Zorya Luhansk

Just realised, Luhansk as in eastern Ukraine. I don't think that area is safe yet is it?

Hmm, pie.

Fuck off http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/newsid=2398899.html

  • The top four clubs from the four top-ranked national associations will now qualify automatically for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
  • Historical success in the competition will also be acknowledged in coefficient calculation (points for previous European titles with a weighted system for UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League titles)

So less teams for the smaller countries, and teams might now get a higher coefficient because of their results in European football god knows how long ago. Can't wait to see clubs like AC Milan with a high coefficient even tho they haven't performed at all in the last few seasons.

Yeah, kind of annoying that. I don't really mind if they want to give more places to the top countries, but I think they should be places in the qualifiers rather than straight in to the group stage. Also makes you wonder which countries are going to lose out on places to give them more.

Since the top 4 leagues have 1 play-off spot each, they can abolish 2 play-off matches in the future (= 2 CL spots). On the hand they need 4 spots in total, so 2 countries will lose a spot. Currently that would be The Netherlands and Switzerland.
Though they could also make some changes in the qualifying process.

So if I understand it correctly the following teams will participate in the Champions League Group Stage in the future:

  • Champions League winner
  • Europa League winner
  • Top 4 from the #1 country (currently Spain)
  • Top 4 from the #2 country (currently Germany)
  • Top 4 from the #3 country (currently England)
  • Top 4 from the #4 country (currently Italy)
  • Top 2 from the #5 country (currently France)
  • Top 2 from the #6 country (currently Russia)
  • Top 1 from the #7 country (currently Portugal)
  • Top 1 from the #8 country (currently Ukraine)
  • Top 1 from the #9 country (currently Belgium)
  • Top 1 from the #10 country (currently Turkey)
  • 4 from the Champions Route (current number is 5)
  • 2 from the League Route (current number is 5)

Total: 32 teams

One thing I immediately noticed: the difference between the #4 and #5 countries is huge (2 guaranteed spots), so huge that it's close to impossible for all countries outside the top 4 to break into the top 4. IMO it's safe to say that from now on England, Spain, Germany and Italy will always have at least 4 teams in the Champions League Group Stages no matter what. Absolutely awful, the #4 and #5 should both get 3 spots, that alone would be a massive improvement.

They play in Kiev or Odessa I think, Luhansk is still an active warzone.

They really f**ked over a number of countries, so what exactly happens is for example an EPL team wins Europa and CL but both are outside of the top 4 do you then have 6 EPL teams in the CL?

That would be hilarious because FIFA and UEFA would go into meltdown and change the rules immediately.

I doubt it. Spain almost had five teams this year already (but Villarreal lost against Monaco in the League Route) and look at the changes they made.

They care about money more than they care about countries from poor footballing nations getting into the CL group stage.

This has been known for a long, long time. Clubs from those top 4 leagues will always out shine clubs from other countries. They bring in greater ad revenue and line UEFA pockets.

The current rules (implemented at the same time as the Europa started giving a CL place) mean that there is a maximum of 5 teams per country allowed in the CL so assuming they haven't changed that rule (nothing to suggest they have) then it would be the 4th placed league team that misses out just like it would be at the moment.

Although the chance of an English team winning the Europa seems pretty slim anyway

Don't know about that tbh Mourinho's Utd look to be a force to be in future.

Tottenham-Liverpool was very entertaining. I was actually expecting to see someone get sent off in the second half.

Hull will be the ones flatter with that scoreline because they were given the full business in that bout, Utd had 29 shots on goal.
