Forums - Nintendo - The overlooked POSITIVES of Digital Foundry's MK8 piece

Funny how those who are on the offensive feel "attacked" when someone comes back with a response. Lol, and as far as the point of this thread, well, maybe you're confused? Look at the thread title again....  It says, the overlooked positives in the DF mario kart 8 piece. So you are talking about the wrong thread(s). This one isn't about that, but if you want to keep that subject up, there are the other threads that you already did that in that ARE actually about frame rate and resolution, hope that clears that up for you. So now I'll ask you, why are YOU here if the only thing you want to talk about are the negative aspects of the DF article, and not the positives? The POSITIVE aspects are what this thread is about, so why are you here, saying what you've already said in the other threads? Hmmm?

I have spoken about both the positives and negatives, both in this thread and the others. I was also one of those repeatedly stating that the 59fps issue wasn't a big deal, and that most didn't understand what DF had actually said. All you did was add fuel to the arguments, thus creating the situation you apparently hate so much.

All you've done in these threads is attack people for having different standards to your own, and adding fuel to arguments that shouldn't exist.

There you go again with the attacking thing...  You have a funny definition of being attacked.I've attacked no one, no matter your spin attempt. I used the same argument that you tried and failed to use: stick to the thread topic, there's other threads for what you and others want to talk about. THIS thread is about the POSITIVES. There's at least two other threads about the resolution and frame rate that exist, so why bring the same tired argument over to this one? Someone obviously created this thread to get away from the others, yet, here are the same people bringing up the same thing. Give it a rest.

No one said this thread was for positives only, or that the other thread was for negatives only. This thread was simply to point out some of the positives others didn't bother to mention previously.

You can't have a thread purely with positives or negatives. Graphics don't work like that. You can't praise the textures and not mention the filtering in the same way you can't praise the in-game fidelity in other games but not mention if there are heavy frame drops. Everything has two sides to it. I didn't see anything in the OP saying people couldn't mention the negatives sides of the positives. In-fact, despite that, 4/5ths of my comment in this thread was still positive. I could have also mentioned that not all of the lighting is dynamic, and that much of it is baked, but that wouldn't have been relevant to the quality of the lighting in general, so i didn't.

Even in this thread you felt the need to attack Sony fans again, it was literally the first thing you said. You apparently "had to", for the umpteenth time.

Anyway, i'll leave you to it now and stop replying. I have little time for posters like you that doesn't actually add anything to topics.

Thanks, I've wasted enough time on you. The thread title says it's about the positive aspects of the DF article. You can't seem to grasp that simple concept. Have a good one.

For all the  talk about "59fps" and "720p with no AA", they also said:

"Tracks are alive and bursting with colour and animation backed by an overhauled lighting solution and a smattering of excellent texture-work."

"Thankfully, the lacklustre image quality does little to spoil an otherwise magnificent visual package."

"This is all enhanced by a convincing combination of real-time and pre-baked shadows that even take occluded edges into account. Complimenting this is a vast array of dynamic light sources, such as headlights, item boxes, and special effects, made possible by what we suspect is a shift to a deferred rendering solution. Even in four-player split-screen we see dynamic lighting play a large role in defining the visual design while simultaneously highlighting detail in the texture work. It's really quite a treat for the eyes."

"The world is further enhanced by the same atmospheric glow we loved in Super Mario 3D World, lending an almost hyper-realistic look to the surroundings alongside smaller details including a more robust particle system and plenty of decal textures. You'll notice plumes of smoke encircling the tyres as you jam on the accelerator, dust and debris kicking up when you drive through dirt, and rising bubbles when submerged in water. Skid-marks and other decals also help give persistence to each lap around the track."

"The frequency and pattern of [the 59fps] problem suggests an internal timing issue, potentially related to Mario Kart TV, rather than one of performance."

"Mario Kart 8 is a beautiful game with just a few small flaws that blemish an otherwise faultless presentation."

Curl, you should include what they said about the 4 player split screen. The frame rate obviously drops from 60 to 30 for each person, but the inpact on playing is relatively small. To quote them exactly:

"--that the game's core mechanics are processing identically to the 60Hz single-player game, so while there will be an increase in input lag, this doesn't quite feel like the muggy 30fps racing games you may be accustomed to"

I wonder if the 4 player split screen may be the reason for the 720p/no AA? Even with the alternating 30fps parts of the screen, the total resources for rendering the 4 (and 2) player modes is likely quite a lot more than the single player. It's plausible that they perhaps wanted to use a consistent (though lackluster) IQ for all the modes rather than a scaling one. It would certainly be an odd choice to make, but not totally out of the question.

Just some food for thought o/

There is no bias here, just a lot of people bitching at each other. If you don't want to talk about the technical side of games, if you couldn't care less what the resolution or frame rate is, then why are you posting in a thread for which the entire purpose is to talk about those specific things?

The entire point of my thread was to attack no one, the point is the people who are being attacked, as you say, are those who don't own a wiiu, attacking the wiiu owners for the system they've invested money into. Funny how you try to spin that. Funny how those who are on the offensive feel "attacked" when someone comes back with a response. Who exactly is being attacked in these threads? You're acting like some sort of victim when nobody is offending you.

Ugh, you now? I never said I was offended, now did I? He said I was attacking people, and the same can be spun the other way. I guess since I bothered him, that brought you in to defend him? Ok, have it then! Lol

Good point man, I added it, thanks. :)

I do actually wonder if they optimized the graphics around splitscreen. The probably figured it would be foremost a multiplayer game and used that as the baseline.

I'm not defending anyone. You have a strange habit of dreaming up imaginary motivation for people.

No prob o/ And yeah it's definitely the feeling i get. I may think it's an odd choice to not use a scaling resolution, but without knowing the details of the engine and tools they use i suppose we can't really know if that was an opinion for them. If it wasn't, then optimizing the game around the multi-player was a good move. A better IQ is nice, but if it would have come at the cost of an unstable frame rate in the split screen then noooooo thank you.
