i think nintendo knew that rare was going to shit, so they decided that it wasnt much of a loss. i dont have any facts to back it up, but the games that rare made after they were sold to microsoft sucked really bad. they havent made anything close to what they used to. makes me feel like the entire team was different and nintendo knew that so it wasnt a huge loss for them.

No. Nintendo wanted to buy Rare, but the Stamper brothers wanted more money than what Nintendo was willing to buy them for. Then Microsoft showed up and offered a bit more.

hmm ok, thanks for clearing that up. maybe nintendo wasnt willing to pay that much because they knew what the talent was worth? because the fact is that the games were not as good once rare switched teams.

Nintendo was too cheap to buy Rare outright.

Incorrect, Nintendo didn't want to buy Rare after they lost a good deal of their talent. Most of the talent that developed Goldeneye and Perfect Dark had already jumped ship. Crytek has more of Rare's talent than Rare does these days.

I dont know if this has ever been talked about on here but did microsoft hurt nintendo when they bought out RARE?

RARE did make some of the best games on nintendo platforms. When microsoft purchased rare, they got ahold of some major games that once played a major role on nintendo. Has this ever been discussed on here?

Agree? or no?

you realize nintendo owned half of rare right?  They obviously had first dibs on buying the studio, but opted to divest instead of invest further.  If they were hurt by rare being bought by microsoft, they have nobody to blame but themselves.

You dont think the games that microsoft got after the buyout would have helped the wii u in sales?

I mean would killer instinct help the wii u in sales?

a new conker? plus all the other game franchises they got.

none of them would have helped the wii u with having better sales?

I once read in an video game magazine interview that Nintendo's strong connection to Rare was built and secured by Howard Lincoln. Without him, there was no future for the cooperation. Rareware made some of the best games in video game history and even if it it didn't hurt the Wii, the lack of high quality AAA Rareware games for sure does heavily hurt the Wii-U and 3DS right now.

Nintendo replaced deadweight with Retro Studios. Microsoft acquiring Rare helped Nintendo.

Retro Developed
2002 - Metroid Prime
2004 - Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
2007 - Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
2009 - Metroid Prime Trilogy
2010 - Donkey Kong Country Returns
2014 - Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
TBA - Wii U Game

Retro Co-developed
2006 - Metroid Hunters
2011 - Mario Kart 7
2013 - Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D

No doubt that both Nintendo and Rare would both be better right now with each other. I think MS killed Rare though, rather than hurting Nintendo.

Ofc any game could help, would it have had a significant impact on Wii U sales?  I doubt it considering 2D fighters are not system sellers and the game was not received very well by reviewers.  Conker is not a big name also, I don't think any of its games have cracked 1m sales.  The only IP I see that would help is Banjo and Nintendo would probably have to develop it themselves, which means taking resources away from another game.

honestly, no, I don't think any of them would have helped the wii u sell more.  If Nintendo's own properties (which are way more popular) can't help the wii u then there is no way rare's old ip's would help.

I beg to differ.

Killer Instinct was a hit according to microsoft. It sold good that even amazon bought the developers.

NO.

rare was going to be kaput anyway and they got money from microsoft..nice move Nintendo!
