I once read in an video game magazine interview that Nintendo's strong connection to Rare was built and secured by Howard Lincoln. Without him, there was no future for the cooperation. Rareware made some of the best games in video game history and even if it it didn't hurt the Wii, the lack of high quality AAA Rareware games for sure does heavily hurt the Wii-U and 3DS right now.
