Forums - Sony - Kaz Hirai: 'PS4 hardware is already profitable'

MoHasanie said:

That's really good but the game division still made a loss last quarter.

That includes Sony online entertainment which has zero to do with playstation, Development cost, manufacturing, point? Moving forward sony was smart to make ps4 with quick cost reduction in mind, like they new Patent for smaller design recently.

Fantastic. I remember when there was 'no way' they could release the most powerful console because of the massive losses they'd incur. And there was certainly no way they could make it the cheaper one too.

The last quarterly results announced the gaming division posting a loss......

hmmm.. let's see, genius:

1. $60mio Write-off on PC software (the only thing explicitly mentioned in the quarterly report)

2. Continued losses in the Vaio hardware segment

3. R&D of 22nm cell chip, possible PS3 gpu shrink

4. R&D, prototyping on server rigs with said cell chips (for game streaming)

5. R&D, prototyping of new PS3 model with said new cell and gpu

6. R&D, prototyping of new PS4 model

7. Huge write-off of cancelled aaa game (I think $100 was mentioned in articles)

8. Many 1st party games still in development - so no revenue stream

9. According to MisterXMedia, Soyn has paid off every single game website and every single game journalist - that surely costs a fortune!

(if all other arguments fail, you can always trust MsiterX's - and the many voices in his head - research).

Actually, pretty surprising they came out +/- 0 in the end..

sales said gaming division?

The sell off of the PC division affected the gaming division due to PC software, it was in the recents fiscal earnings.

I expect good results for the gaming division next year.

2.  Ps+... Living in a cave or something? Plus is required for online. Plus was a flop on the ps3 as recently revalued by Sony themselves. What's the difference now? Oh... Multiplayer is behind there too, bingo... Profits.

.

1st of All playstation plus is not all 100% required for"all online play on the PS4" for all  online multi-player gaming on the PS4, you can still play some games on the PS4 that are online Multi-play component without the need of playstation +. The fact you know this , but yet still try to imply that its "required" is spreading incorrect information.

AS FOR YOUR CLAIM of

"Plus was a flop on the ps3"

Your Opinion does not mean it is a fact, it just means it's your opinion. one i happen to quite disagree with.

5% take up rate (maximum from sony's own figures).  Sounds like a flop to me.

Ah number 1 you are right, sorry I read that wrong, but Vaio HW has nothing to do with the gaming division.

I think many will be upset when Sony starts releasing green numbers for each of their products. May even happen next year ^^

...Let the Sony Domination continue with the PS4...

All that means is they lost more than they earned over the whole quarter... not that its NOW profitable.

Could easily have gained profitability towards end of the quarter but not enough to make up the losses. Plus they had large losses from items not PS4 related in same quarter.

I remember when it launched they were like "you need to buy one game and one year of PS+ for this to be profitable to us"

How did they cut costs so quickly?

Probably the yen exchange rate and taking for granted the average user's habits (The consoles sold until now are profitable, so the next ones will be too)

PS4 keeps on impressing.
