Forums - Sony - Kaz Hirai: 'PS4 hardware is already profitable'

The last quarterly results announced the gaming division posting a loss......

Console launches are a dirty business. Eg. Sony has sold over 7ml PS4s right? Well, the nature of the beast doesn't mean that they have paid for only 7+ml APUs, HDDs, RAM....etc. They would probably have paid for over 10-15ml of all those components each. And this is just looking at components, labor is a completely different matter especially when you are ramping up supply to meet demand. And of course all that air freighting they were doing to make units avaialable. These things add up.

No way Sony could afford another PS3.   They went safe this time.

Of course it is. Paid online is a beautiful thing.

Damn that quote got popular. Soooo many possible explanations!

Personally, I think PS+ plays a role, as well as marketplace revenue, not just the hardware by itself. But alas, it still has a ways to go to make the entire division profitable, maybe next quarterly results.

This easiest way to be unbaised is to not discriminate despite bias. Any explanations you come up with should be applicable to all the big 3.

The successful launch of the PlayStation 4 (PS4), with more than 7 million units sold in 72 countries, will also be used as a way to promote Sony content, said Hirai.

This I find interesting. Now Sony will be copying MS's practice of ads plastered on our consoles homepage ;P. Only this time, the ads will be more self-serving to Sonys agendas.

Since many people who own Xbox (and many who don't) complain about so much product placement, I wonder how PS gamers will adapt to the exact same situation, except the ads will feature Sony movies, music artists under the Sony label, and TV/camera ads.

Why Sony are you stealing MS's rich culture?!?!

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

If it's really profitable, i can see them release new systems frequently now. 3 - 4 years tops. It makes much more sense to aim a little lower spec wise and replace it earlier than go all out with a very expensive system that's still going to be old a few years later.

What was the reason that Sony sold the previous consoles at loss? (sorry for my english)

The vita has nothing to do with this. It's almost an irrelevance financially.

Says Sony's CFO

I'm referring to the ps4 being profitable. I'm staying on topic.  The ps4 as a device won't be profitable but since Sony introduced a sub service that users pretty much have to have they are profiting...

What would that be?

Of course. They should have done it with the ps3.

You know that's bullshit

They already do advertise on the PlayStation Store and What's New Section on the PS3
