I'll bet anyone Killzone 2 makes a profit.

How much Red Steel advertising have you seen compared to Uncharted?

Cause I still see Uncharted adds every once and a while,  and at one point i'd see the add 4+ times a day.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

Well, good thing they made a profit, no game deserves to bomb and leave a huge team who made a great effort disappointed and companies in the loss, of course there are some cases when the game is so unpolished, so bad, that is a rip off to consumers and it should be avoided at all costs. (chicken shoot)
If great games do not bomb, that means there will be more great games in the future.

Fullfilled Prophecies

Are you kidding. People here were saying that all PS3/360 games cost 40-60 Million.

Don't give me this, Oh wait, that really expensive. While it's a high number, it's a lot less than most say.

And being that Sony is the publisher (kitler!), there is no other cut taken from profit than the retailer cut.

They ONLY said that about the biggest games, like MGS4 and Halo 3, and the numbers ALSO included marketing. What they said about MOST games, which are based on ACTUAL REPORTS, was that the games cost $10-$20 million.

Uncharted is on the high end of that, which is even more high for the first game in a franchise.

You just selectively looked at the comments to twist them into saying all HD games cost this high.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Don't forget that Uncharted was very expensive (some shops sold it for €75!!), so Sony did get more revenue from this game than normal. Plus, add the fact that they don't have to pay €10 (I don't know the real number though) license fee, Sony made like 15 euros more money on each game sold than a norma, third party, dev gets.

Shams:

Excellent breakdown of the figures.

If Uncharted is around 4 million profit that's a huge dissapointment. The return on capital invested is very low. Don't forget that a part of the profits goes to the shareholders dividend (in this case Sony) and what's left can be invested in new games.
Even if they invest the full profit of their BIGGEST game last year, it will only be a small part of the total cost of the new game.

Let's take a look at Konami. Normally a MGS game would be the main profit for a whole year. This time it needs to sell 3.5 million copies (at a rumoured dev cost of $ 70,-) to break even. That means that no matter how much copies are sold, it won't have a massive profit.
Normally Konami could have used the profits of games like these to cover for niche games, like Suikoden. These ridiculous high dev costs actually make it less likely for niche games to appear anymore.

Wait, what? That's expensive. It isn't Killzone2 expensive, but it's very expensive all the same.

Why would you post this as proof of how cheap the PS3 is, when it's apparent that pretty much everyone else agrees that this is, in fact, great evidence that the system is expensive to develop for?

"India only has a 20 percent infant mortality rate, not 40 percent like some crazy people claimed. Told you guys it was an awesome place to grow up!"

Because some people made a theory that PS3 games usually cost 30-35 million ... at least thats what Ive read in one of the threads here :P

Vote the Mayor for Mayor!

It should also be mentioned that Uncharted is bundled in Europe (there are other bundles, but still). So some of those copies were paid by Sony, not by customers.

@shams, i highy doubt Red steel has shipped that many units, i have never even seen a red steel game in any store except blockbuster. And i'm sure we can agree that its not selling out with each shipment

The general rule I see with launch titles, is that they tend to stay in *all* stores - basically for the life of the console.

For instance, every video store I know that rents out Wii games has Red Steel (and all the other launch titles). I was in my local blockbuster tonight, and noticed two copies (neither rented out). Various more recent titles aren't on the shelf at all.

I don't have any solid figures - but for a launch that has sold over 1m units - I wouldn't be surprised if it has shipped an extra 700k worldwide.

...

@all:

My figures may well be off enough to put Uncharted ahead, or significantly more profitable (maybe less marketing, or less per unit costs, etc..). Again - it was just ballpark, to give people an idea of how the figures *should* be calculated.
