Nonsense.
Mario is italian, speaks english(or japonese) with latin accent.
I think is more diversity than lots of games arround.

Fun fact! Lego characters were specifically made to be yellow because it's not a real skin color (and also because it was cheaper to manufacture). This, of course, caused butthurt. Now real skin colors have been introduced, but not exclusively implemented. The self-righteous will complain about anything in total ignorance -- and, sadly, they get what they want.

All of those characters are original Mario Bros. characters and as the OP said there is always the Mii characters to take care of that if that is important to you.

Race = genetic make up. Ethnicity = cultural background. Nationality = what nation you associate with... wtf are you talking about? those are all different things and if you are white then you are white.
