Nice summary there!

Is Game Arts doing anything at the moment?

Is Xenoblade, and the upcoming X, connected in some level to Xenogears, story wise?

Game arts has been working on the Ragnarok odyssey series. What is interesting is that the art style of that series and of Grandia are very similar so i have hopes that they will see it as the next logical step to further tap into their technology. Though chances are they will just make another RO.

As for Xeno, i am not completely sure as i didnt purchase a Wii. I got the game running on dolphin but i only saw a bit of the beggining. I do stongly believe that Xenoblade is the origin story of the Xenogears universe as it was referenced in the end of Xenosaga 3 and we can see that Xenoblade is an origin story. X though, probably because i didnt really play through Xenoblade (i so wish Nintendo would release it on the e-shop or made an HD remake) i cant be sure. It does look like its a direct sequal to Xenoblade. Probably the beggining of the dolls/mechs and i'm guessing that special sword the monado will connect to one of the them and into the future of the Xenogears series.

In effect i believe X to be Xenogears 0-2.

My top 2 at the moment are Dragon Quest and Persona.

Dragon Quest is very nostalgic to me even though I only got into the series in 2012, it's got something about it.. Ive loved every Dragon Quest game, sadly Im still waiting for VII 3DS to be localized ;-;

Persona: I love Persona, it's amazing. Sadly I have all the Persona games and have to wait for 5 ;-; it's strange that Persona seems to get more and more popular every release. It may leave niche status by Persona 7 if it keeps it up XD

Phantasy Star - Old school turn based style ones I enjoyed are Dead
Valkyria Chronicles - Dead
FF - Haven't appealed to me since PS2. As a huge fan of PS1 FFs I really wish I could get some Type 0.
Parasite Eve - Dead
Vagrant Story - Dead
Breath of Fire - Dead
Dark Cloud - Dead
Golden Sun - Dead
Pokemon - Thank goodness not all of my favorite RPG series died

This thread makes me sad :-

The thing about wishing those "Dead" series would return is the fact that if they did they would most likely be dramatically different than what you loved about them. For example I wish Parasite Eve could return but either it would be on portables as that's where the last one released (3rd Birthday) or it would be an action game like RE6.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

Lunar is also from Game Arts, right?

Wild ARMs is my favourite JRPG series ever.  No other series was consistently good across as many games as that (Final Fantasy was great for a streak but then tailed off for quite some time before picking up again).

The saddest thing about the current state of JRPG's is that there's very little "mid tier" stuff left.  No Breath of Fire; no Suikoden; no Wild ARMs... things like Tales or Ni no Kuni survive but they're few and far between.

As a result, I've been turning to more niche JRPG's for my fix.  And they're much better than I was ever expecting them to be, in all honesty.

My favourite JRPG series in order:

1. Wild ARMs
2. Final Fantasy
3. Tales of
4. Atelier
5. Breath of Fire
6. Ys

I've also enjoyed games in series like Grandia; Star Ocean; Arc the Lad; Legend of Heroes & Hyperdimension Neptunia series but haven't played enough to qualify them making the list yet.

Do you have any hope, even just a tiny one, that Sony will revive Wild Arms?

I am shocked and appalled that no one has mentioned Kingdom Hearts yet, you don't deserve my list!

big reason rpgs died out was because developers tried to "Innovate" and appeal towards the west which caused the normal JRPG lovers to hate the games, and destroyed an word of mouth it would've had naturally if it was a straight up JRPG. Example is Ni No Kuni its a straight up JRPG so word of mouth went around about how it was good, and not like other crappy rpgs.

I don't think that is true.  I think if they were passionate and wanted to give me a similar experience they could. Developers would simply rather work on their idea of what they feel the IP should be because they don't believe they are responsible to customers.

What's wrong with JRPGs on handhelds? DS has a whole bunch of amazing titles (as does GBA); 3DS is getting there. PSP/Vita not bad either.

Would you say Tales and Persona are currently the rare exception?...I mean, where they´re gaining popularity in the West and not in decline.

I think as the genre has shrunk and many series have died their is opportunity for sales with less competition than ten-fifteen years ago.  Tales in many respects has become the new standard for solid JRPGs and Namco seem to be more comfortable bringing games westward.

Persona is a great series, it's main issue is how late in console cycles 3 & 4 released and 5 will.  I knew several people that passed on 4 due to moving on to next generation of systems at the time and then discovered it on Vita.  I hope the series can continue to grow, but I worry how conservative Japanese companies can be about taking a risk and getting a game like this out in the first year or so of a console's life cycle.
