I think he meant you can keep them after that month is over, not you can keep them when your gold runs out.

It all boils down to the quality. If the games are shit then it's still playing catch up to PS+.

True, but at the rates the sales a big portion of PS4 owners will also have a PS3, which is already 5 or more games per month, even without the Vita. 

You can also "buy" the games even if you don't have the console, in case you decide to get one later on.

I thought there was a good amount of people who switched from 360 or traded in their PS3?

Does this actually make much of a difference though. The vast majority will re-subscribe anyway

i doubt it very much that the games for xbox1 downloadable free monthly titles are yours to keep even if sub ends i doubt that very much
