Not the media exactly but controversy would reach the media eventually and that would be bad for Nintendo. Say a father buys his son this game and finds out that his boy was playing a game where he is married to a male avatar. He could begin a scandal about it and it could reach the media.

As I said they just want to avoid controversy and this their way of avoiding it.

It's not thrown in your face. His son would have to actually want to date another male and then maybe that says something about him that his father should start to deal with.

If you can't deal with life, don't play a life simulator.

Sadly, Nintendo can't know how people will react to the option of same sex marriage in their game. Think of it as a safety measure just in case.

I do not think it's a bad idea at all but I can understand why Nintendo is choosing to go this route. Basil the Woman up there actually has a point. Politics shouldn't be mixed with videogames!

Why not? Plenty of games have done this already for better (Deus Ex) or worse (Metal Gear Solid and Bioshock). You can find political discussions/ideas in movies, books, music, paintings, etc. as well as videogames. Sorry, I disagree with the notion that politics (or religion for that matter) should be taboo subjects.

Nintendo, however, is just not in the business of making these kinds of games. They make some amazing games, but I would never suggest that any of them have a deep and complex narrative. They are making the right decision here.

We love to make big deals out of small things, don't we?

I have seen way too many articles on this. People need to relax... It is just a game.

1doesnotsimply

agree with what ICstats said;

I find this to be absolutely ridiculous; not that I'm against gay marrige but come on, who says nintendo has to become an adversary for gay rights?(I hope I don't sound too condeming when I say this) they created it in an image they see fit, as long as it's not demeaning any group/culture/lifestlye then it should be okay, are we at the point of protesting a game because it doesn't include the preferences you want....that's a tad bit ridiculous, just don't buy it simple as that.

Its not that big of a deal.

Maybe nintendo are full of bigots..maybe other countries who don't support same sex marriage are bigots..I'm pretty sure China is a bigoted place

Or maybe they have a different system of beliefs. Just because someone does not agree with the legal definition of marriage that you believe in, does not mean they are a bigot.

(CNN) -- An upcoming game for Nintendo's handheld devices will let players enter a virtual world in which they make friends, flirt and can even get married and have kids.

But those romantic relationships can't be with characters of the same gender -- a fact a growing online movement hopes to change.

Tye Marini, 23, is a self-described Nintendo fanatic. The Mesa, Arizona, man was excited to learn that "Tomodachi Life," a version of a "life simulation" game previously only available in Japan, would be released in North America for the Nintendo 3DS next month.

He was less excited, however, when he learned that his in-game avatar -- or "Mii," in Nintendo-speak -- could only be romantically involved with a female character, as opposed to one representing his real-life fiancé.

And, thus, was #Miiquality born.

Launched last month, Marini's social-media campaign has begun picking up steam on Facebook and Twitter, where like-minded gamers are asking Nintendo to reconsider.

"By excluding same-sex relationships in a game that's focused around relationships like this one, they're really excluding a lot of people," Marini told CNN affiliate KTVK.

In the game, players create or import their Mii (pronounced "me"), which then can interact with characters that represent other real-world friends in their network.

"The situation wouldn't be as big of a deal if it weren't for the fact that relationships and marriage are a huge part of the game," Marini said in the video he created to announce his campaign. "The relationships and interactions between the Mii characters in the game, coupled with their relationships to you in real life, are what makes this game so appealing. ... Not being able to date and marry the gender that I'm attracted to in real life really takes all of the immersion and fun out of it for me."

Nintendo appears to be unswayed.

"Nintendo never intended to make any form of social commentary with the launch of 'Tomodachi Life,'" the company said in a written statement.

"The relationship options in the game represent a playful alternate world rather than a real-life simulation. We hope that all of our fans will see that 'Tomodachi Life' was intended to be a whimsical and quirky game, and that we were absolutely not trying to provide social commentary."

At a time when barriers to same-sex marriage are falling across the United States, Nintendo's stance could be a public relations problem for a company already facing slumping revenue amid weak sales for its Wii U console.

Marini acknowledged to KTVK that "there are far greater concerns out there" than relationship options in a video game. But he noted that popular games like "The Sims," a life-simulation franchise launched by Electronic Arts in 2000, have allowed same-sex relationships for years.

He said he realizes that even if Nintendo wanted to make a change, it's too late to do so before the game is released in America. But he hopes they will release an update once the game is already out, or allow same-sex relationships in future titles.

Marini also specifically said he's not calling for a boycott of the game, saying it would do more harm than good.

None of this is true. Nintendo did not say no to anything. They just choose to avoid it. Then people such as yourself go to sensationalist nonsense media sites and eat up their trash. Should I never buy anything again that doesn't include gayness? Good greif!

All this mess because they haven't even tought about gay couples and yet, all consoles are made in china in slavery-like conditions and no one gives half a fuck.
So amusing :)

I am disgusted by this. These gay activists rage like crazy and attack everything and everybody. Somebody should finally put an end to this, cause they know no limits or borders. Seriously, Nintendo being such a family friendly company would be crazy to start including homosexual content in their games. They enjoy a great deal of trust coming from parents, but a move like this would destroy it all in one instance and we all know what it's like with trust - it takes years to earn it, but an instance to lose it. I'm sure including such themes would give them nothing positive, but would surely hurt the sales of their handhelds. I plan to raise my kids on Nintendo the way it is now and don't want such changes.

It should have been an option from the start. That's the problem. But Nintendo is condoning Japan's stance on gay marriage and that's what shameful.

its a shame nintendo stay away from social issues... especially they have a big voice in family

Wow, what an ignorant statement. How about they aren't staying away, but just share and promote different views on the matter than yours? The good old traditional view?

Wii U is a GCN 2 - I called it months before the release!

My Vita to-buy list: The Walking Dead, Persona 4 Golden, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, TearAway, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, History: Legends of War, FIFA 13, Final Fantasy HD X, X-2, Worms Revolution Extreme, The Amazing Spiderman, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate - too many no-gaemz :/

My consoles: PS2 Slim, PS3 Slim 320 GB, PSV 32 GB, Wii, DSi.

It's really easy for people to say this issue is no big deal.

As an Black gay male I hardly ever get that opportunity. Outside of a few EA games and Dragon's Dogma I have never had the opportunity to be represented that way in a game. For me it's a big deal.

Further more I don't see any issues with the sales of the Sims, Mass Effect, and Dragon's Dogma. I also don't recall any uproar over it being included in those games so I find it hard to believe there would be a massive uproar about it for Tomodatchi Life.

Nintendo should play the beginning of Tearaway. I think they way they handle avatar creation would work really well for something like Tamagotchi Life or Animal Crossing while being really open to the LGBTQ community. Just replace You with Mii and ask whom you would like to marry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etxceok4M44

I believe Nintendo didn't intend for there to be any controversy. Given how easy a fix it should be programming wise if there is never an update or the next iteration is without change then I might start to find that more difficult to believe.
