Forums - Nintendo - Wii U hardware no longer sold at loss, apparently

good news especially with mario kart around the corner

Around the Network

they expect to sell few wii us and expect to profit...
damn investors...

without them they could cut the price, go back to losses, and stand the losses a year more.
but they would sell more wii us and also more games, that can turn in profit in a long term.

What I find hard to believe is that this under powered, low spec, system with a controller made like a kid toy was ever being sold at a lost. It can't just be me right? What are they making the system out of, silver? The 360 was made 9 years ago, and they never sold that at a lost, and the Wii U isn't much ahead in terms of graphics, and the CPU is actually weaker.

I make bad threads.

SSB really went downhill after Melee....

What is the actual quote and its context?

Because in their financial statement they said

"The “Wii U” hardware still has a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits owing mainly to itsmarkdown in the United States and Europe"

See people? They could of had another price cut to coincide with MK8!
But I guess they didn't because they've accepted that the Wii U will never be a big success, so instead they're just gonna squeeze out as much profit as they can from it. Definitely a good idea at this point!

I think whats really costing them is the whole 0 latency thing between the wiiU and the gamepad... Not even Nvidia shield or the vita can have as much low latency as the wiiU and the gamepad while streaming games and I am sure the tech is quite impressive for that... So theres that, then there is the wiiU hardware itself and the gamepad also has a bunch of things such as a nice camera, mic, speakers, IR blaster, nfc, touchscreen, headphone jack, volume control, wii motion sensor (the bar thing inside the gamepad), battery, accelerometer, gyroscope and its also a controller itself... So I think the cost adds up

Okay, you're just way wrong here.

360 was sold at a loss initially actually.

Wii U is expensive because Nintendo's insisted on heavily customized components ... for example if Nintendo wanted 360-ish graphics performance that's no problem and very cheap for AMD to provide. But Nintendo wanted that in a small casing size that only used 33 watts of electricity ... now with all those requirements, such a chip has to be made from scratch and that means its expensive.

Also a giant touch panel on the controller didn't help with costs.

Well, one explanation I can provide is that the financial document is explaining the losses of the last 12 months, where the WiiU hardware did indeed have a negative impact on profit.
Whereas now they are at break even manufacturing costs or better.

The quote is linked in the OP. It wouldn't make sense to me for them to fudge this, considering they had already admitted hardware losses in the financial document just this morning, so just leaving it be wouldn't have surprised anyone.

The latency thing is impressive, but it's just wireless streaming.  I've been doing that with my PC for the last three years.   The gamepad is only single touch, you need to use a stylus, I can't imangine that screen was expensive to manufacture.  The speakers and headphone jack won't drive the price up much.  The Wii U has basically the same motion features as a Wii Remote,  so I can't see why the tab itself should amount to  100- 150$.
