360 was sold at a loss initially actually.
Wii U is expensive because Nintendo's insisted on heavily customized components ... for example if Nintendo wanted 360-ish graphics performance that's no problem and very cheap for AMD to provide. But Nintendo wanted that in a small casing size that only used 33 watts of electricity ... now with all those requirements, such a chip has to be made from scratch and that means its expensive.
Also a giant touch panel on the controller didn't help with costs.
