The obvious answer is Pokemon NFC toyline for Wii U this fall, cross-launch with the new Gen III games for some kind of Poke-stravaganza. My guess is that quality of life will be next fiscal year, spring 2015 launch in Japan.

Nintendo did try the Pokemon NFC thing but didn't really work. No one was interested. They have simply ran out of ideas. None of what was successful on the Wii, became successful on the Wii U and they haven't really tried or are willing to try with new IP's, so all that's left is platformers from the ususal 1st party franchises.

Nintendo didn't do anything to reinvent itself or to appeal to others this gen. I'm not disputing the fact that Nintendo games are indeed the best games quality wise, but the same franchises and kinds of games, over and over and over finally wore out their image.

Nintendo is basically done with home consoles, and handheld systems are not heading the right way either, popularity wise.
QoL is a sign of things to come. Nintendo either diversified or died trying to stay relevant. A hybrid console, like you proposed might be a good move, but I really doubt people will have confidence in a console like that acting as a home console on your TV. It will be no with doubt underpowered and will suffer from the same symptoms the actual home console suffers from.

I think their best move is to call it quits while losses are relatively small. We might soon be watching at a non-video game making company.

I for one wouldn't buy any of their products ever again if they stop Wii support before 2017, so considering how things are going, the most probable scenario is that this coming year will be the last time where I buy any Nintendo product.

Maybe a miracle happens thanks to MK8? That's very unlikely though!

They're probably projecting the same sales for the 3ds this year as last year. You also need to take into account that the wiiU doesn't cost much to make, so they profit off of it pretty fast.

Jesus dude, why did I get jumped on like that? Notice how I didn't say that they aren't selling at a loss? I'm saying they recoup it fast. Why I said, "so they profit off of it pretty fast." AKA they recoup their losses fast, not that their are none. 

Definitely not : they're targeting only 3.6m WiiU shipped so that means they don't even believe those game can be big hits.  Unless they diminish drastically their exepenses & cost of sales, the 200m figure doesn't add up. So I suspect they're betting on some big QoL innovation to attract far beyond the gaming population.

Production costs fall over time. There might be a more cost efficient 3DS model on the way.

Exchange rate for a Japanese company could make a huge difference. If the yen weakens that would be a big help.

Last year, they had some pretty big R&D budgets. This could have been as a part of the QOL platform, and they might start recovering that money next year.

It's really not inconceivable that they'll make money. Of course, I'm not saying it's likely either. They made money during the cube days too. I don't know how exactly they'll do it, because I don't know their financials.
