I'm so glad Sony added that new used games feature. I've been wanting consoles and PCs to do that for generations. Thankfully someone in the industry can innovate and provide it. Now if only someone in the industry would figure out a way to be backwards compatible, that would be really new.
But seriously, for specific hype building announcements I do think the live thing is fun, and I think it sends a clearer message about excitement, even if most of the presentation isn't actually as interesting or as funny as the new Nintendo Directs are. I don't think there was a stronger way for Microsoft to get the message that no one liked their DRM policies than to hear that cheer for their competitor. Reactions online can simply be fickle and overly-angry, but that cheer was un-debatable.
That said I don't think that their E3 conference is the reason PS4 is selling well. And I don't think simply going to the conference would give Nintendo a sales boost this year. I'll need to see what happens on the floor at E3 before I call Nintendo's strategy a good idea, but I personally am excited for it and will not miss their live event. The digital event will probably talk in far more detail about games.

This thread title is very misleading. I get what you're trying to say, but a NIntendo Direct is a Nintendo Direct and an E3 press conference is an E3 press conference. There's no two ways about it and there's no reason to try to jumble them together in an odd attempt in making Nintendo's decisions seem superior. Let's stick to the established definitions.
With my other points out of the way, the digital event is NOT a press conference.
Hopefully it's better than Nintendo's press conferences ever were.

Ok, i'm just gonna back away slowly now...
I didn't mean it will change my opinion on things, nor did I imply that. I just think that seeing the audience interaction about announcements can be pretty important or if anything, just make it more lively. Like when people Boo'd the vita 3g being on contract with AT&T only or those quick jabs at the Xbox one DRM scandals from Sony (Supporting used games, etc) It adds a bit of live into the show.
But conference at E3 is that thing with stage and lights and live broadcasting, isn´t? O thought Nintendo were doing a digital event of some sort, like a big Nintendo Direct.

No, its a different stage. Still a conference. |
Strictly speaking, it's not a conference. It's a show or a presentation.
Of course, strictly speaking, Sony and MS are doing shows, not conferences, too. People seem to confuse "conference" with "presentation". Those shows are press presentations. They are *presenting* to the press. They aren't *conferring* with them. A press conference is where you make a statement, and then take questions. None of the big game companies take questions from the audience at the end of their "press conference".
Nintendo is doing an E3 presentation, just as Sony and MS are. The key difference is that Nintendo is pre-recording their presentation. And if Nintendo is really smart, they'll have the media watch it a little earlier than the worldwide streaming of it, and have an actual press conference at the end of it - get the media to ask questions. They could then stream the conference a few hours later (perhaps even simultaneously with Sony's actual presentation, since it's just a media thing). The idea would be that the media would be able to write up articles for posting immediately after the end of the streaming of the presentation, with more than just "hey, they showed this thing you just watched, and here's what you saw...", but instead, with direct information obtained from Nintendo staff, and thus having new information to talk about.
I don't think Nintendo will be THAT smart, though. But they should at least make sure that the media have something to sink their proverbial teeth into, so they don't feel left out.
EDIT: Hmmm, looks like Pokoko already made the point about conference vs presentation. Ah well.

Meh. The press (who make up the audiences at the conferences) will not be shy about letting you know how they feel, if anyone's interested. More importantly, if a conference designed to be just as much circus as informative requires an audience reaction to make it lively, well, can there be a better argument for why replacing them with something better isn't a bad idea?
