Strictly speaking, it's not a conference. It's a show or a presentation.
Of course, strictly speaking, Sony and MS are doing shows, not conferences, too. People seem to confuse "conference" with "presentation". Those shows are press presentations. They are *presenting* to the press. They aren't *conferring* with them. A press conference is where you make a statement, and then take questions. None of the big game companies take questions from the audience at the end of their "press conference".
Nintendo is doing an E3 presentation, just as Sony and MS are. The key difference is that Nintendo is pre-recording their presentation. And if Nintendo is really smart, they'll have the media watch it a little earlier than the worldwide streaming of it, and have an actual press conference at the end of it - get the media to ask questions. They could then stream the conference a few hours later (perhaps even simultaneously with Sony's actual presentation, since it's just a media thing). The idea would be that the media would be able to write up articles for posting immediately after the end of the streaming of the presentation, with more than just "hey, they showed this thing you just watched, and here's what you saw...", but instead, with direct information obtained from Nintendo staff, and thus having new information to talk about.
I don't think Nintendo will be THAT smart, though. But they should at least make sure that the media have something to sink their proverbial teeth into, so they don't feel left out.
