Well it is E3 Direct but should do the same job for us hardcore forum gamers. The presentations are for casuals and screw the casuals is all i heard during last gen anyways. I think i probably said it couple of times too.

This is a good point. Would Sony have gotten the same reaction if they didn't do a conference last year? That 60 second applause was something to behold. Or remember when Nintendo unveiled Twilight Princess? The reactions were incredible. I just don't think a Nintendo Direct will have the same impact. 

They're really just presentations. The word 'conference' usually implies discussion or a Q&A with the press. Sony and Microsoft do live E3 presentations. Nintendo does a taped presentation and broadcasts it during E3.

Is one better than the other? Well, honestly, I think live presentations have far more potential, both good and bad. A taped presentation might keep you from embarrassing yourself (see: Activision and Jamie Kennedy) but I think it also caps how much excitement and buzz you can generate. I believe that's a real factor, intangible or not. Watch a wrestling program or a sports event with a dead crowd and you won't feel nearly as excited as one with a hot crowd. An audience can add a tremendous amount.

There is also public perception. I do think the public in general will see Nintendo doing a taped presentation as a sign that they have nothing very exciting to show off. I'm sure Nintendo fans will think otherwise but, really, what use is there preaching to the choir?

On Nintendo`s side, yes, they are the same. But doesn`t mean the way you present your content is the same.
If you watch just the first 5-7 minutes of 2012`s E3 conference you`ll understand how a press conference differs from a ND - let´s see what a Digital Event is all about, too.
In a ND everything is recorded and Iwata can`t always excite people. And it`s not just him. Even Reggie acts differently during NDs from when he`s on stage.
NDs are more laidback, if you will. A press conference is more about creating excitement and doing crazy things that come out in a more natural way - again, watch the first minutes of E3 2012 and you`ll see.

But enough of philosophy! :D

To me, it`s always been like comparing a band live show with watching that same show, at home, on a DVD.
There`s just no beating a live performance.

If they had done an actual live show with the same exact trailers and just with more talking, it would have had equal impact. The trailers they showed last year were uninspired for the most part (aside from secondary trailers for both X and Bayonetta 2), but they really undersold their heaviest hitters: 3D World, Kart 8, and Tropical Freeze. That would have been the same either way, and arguably could have been worse before a live audience, because the way they portrayed 3D World made it look like an up-ressed 3D Land, instead of what we ended up getting.

Meh. Don't worry. It'll be cool when Sony starts doing it in a few years' time.

and i dont understand why people cant get it. its a stupid decision not because a direct wont do the same job as a confrence. yes, we will get the announcement, yes we will get the news, and yes the transfer of information wont be any different if it were done live or done pre recoded.

its a stupid decision because a confrence simply gets people hyped more, it attracts more people to watch it, simple as that. Nintendo should have known media outlets would have a negative reaction towards a no confrence and just a direct (most probably because it means less money to them) but still, they should have known it will cause a negative reaction from media outlets. 

people get hyped more for a live event than a prerecorded one. its just how things are. its bad marketing to make the direct, simple as that. the end result would be the same when it comes to game announcments and new news, but how people get hyped and how many people watch the show would be different, thats why its a stupid decision to make the Direct instead of a confrence.
