Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Wii U sales trend may be just as expected if we look at Nintendo's home console sales.

Did you expect Wii U's current sales trend?

Yes 127 45.85%

No 95 34.30%

Yo Mama 49 17.69%

Total:271

This idea has been talked about a lot on these forums. The wii was an outlier. With those sales removed, we can see that nintendo has been on a downward trend for generations.

When you look deeper into the numbers, you realize that the apparent coincidence illustrated in the OP is just that: a coincidence. For various reasons, North America and Japan took turns shedding Nintendo market share over three generations. Games, release timing, duration of support, and other factors like price and marketing can make a huge difference. There was no trend, just an odd arrangement of different regional performances over a three-generation span.

Just wanted to say good job on the incredibly insightful post. It's very interesting information, especially in regards to the 5th generation. I didn't realize the N64 was so much more popular in the West. This exact reason is why I have a hard time taking the simplied analysis in the OP seriously. There are certain factors that need to be taken into consideration when trending data, and simply using LTD really isn't suitable.

But yeah, I just wanted to let you know it didn't fall on deaf ears. : )

Your arguments are going to collapse on themselves when Wii U does drop in price.

again, that doesnt go against what we are saying.

How can the price drop if the cost of producing the system doesn't decline? Nintendo aren't in a position to take harsher losses.

The “Wii U” hardware still has a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits owing mainly to its
markdown in the United States and Europe, and unit sales of software, which has high profit margins, did not
grow sufficiently"
