They could still do one in what remains of this month (unlikely, but still possible), Nintendo doesn't usually announce the Directs until only a couple days prior.

I really hope they have a conference this year. Last year's ND was far less memorable than Sony's or Microsoft's presentations, and also weaker than any other Nintendo presentation since 2010, which was possible the best press conference I've seen at E3.

Hold your horses for a second. Nintendo is yet to announce their full FY results (Happening on May 7th) and that will bring us a new round of Q/A with investors as well as announcements of games/actions, etc including what E3 will bring.

Things may get nasty for Iwata as the CEO voting for reappointing/dismissal takes place on June, to determine if he will remain CEO or not, and results are gonna be very bad compared to the forecasts and on their own as well.

May 7 is their investors meeting. They could announce they won´t be doing a normal E3 confference there.

Hopefully, they'll spend more time announcing new games then advertising games they've already announced. I'd rather have a new Metroid game than a new Smash Bros character or Bayonetta 2 trailor.

Have they ever announced games at these things before? Seems like an awkward place to do it, especially with E3 right around the corner. I think at most they'll anounce a MK8 bundle and another $50 price drop. That'd put a snag on my MK8 Direct idea though.

Iwata announced what turned out to be Return to Dream Land at an investors meeting in January 2011.  Showed footage of the game, then it was detailed at E3 that year.

Well I certainly wouldn't be against them announcing more games at anytime, and considering they just announced Fatal Frame, they're clearly not against announcing stuff despite E3 being just around the corner.

Didn`t remember the June meeting would be this crucial to Iwata.

My guess is that Iwata will ask investors to wait for E3, at the coming investor meeting in May. What he will say is that QoL will be present at E3.

April is not finished yet, and Nintendo could announce Direct for may before june's E3.
