Forums - Sony - Why do I feel the urge to buy a PS4?

*Sound Of Rain said:

I've never had the urge to buy a PS system before. I've owned all 3 previous consoles but that was because of family members and gifts. I've enjoyed all of them but have never bought one myself...now I feel the need to buy a PS4. Yet, none of the games interest me besides for InFamous SS.

I think I mainly want to play some PS classics but my PS3 broke. Does PS4 have PS classics yet?

Anyway, I always planned to buy a Wii U first (got it earlier this year) and then depending on E3 get a PS4 or XBO during this Holiday. Now, despite the XBO having Kinect (which I like) and better exclusives for my tastes so far, I want a PS4.

Thoughts?

Same problem I have except I already have both the X1 and Wii U.  I want Infamous SS, but resisting until the library builds up I think...  That, and Titanfall is demanding all my time now, and with summer weather coming more often here I spend less time gaming.  When I do it's Titanfall.  Bought DKTF a week or so ago on Amazon, only played 3 levels so far because TF sucks all my time.

Well I tell you that one day, man, better be your life. Because, you know, you can say, oh man, you can cry about the other 364, man, but you're gonna lose that one day, man, and that's all you've got. You gotta call that love, man. That's what it is, man. If you got it today you don't want it tomorrow, man, 'cause you don't need it, 'cause as a matter of fact, as we discovered on the train, tomorrow never happens, man. It's all the same fucking day, man."

Was this a conversation on April 20th?  Either way, I like it.

I am afraid I do not know your reference off the top of my head.

  1. Nope. Don't care what everyone else is doing. That's stupid, esspecially when buying a $400 product
  2. Awesome graphics are nice to have but gameplay and atmosphere matter much more
  3. I haven't played too many Sony exclusives so no. If I do get a PS4, I'll try some I never tried before for sure
  4. I don't have a job so...

4/20 (April 20th) was a marijuana reference.  Since you say this is from Janis Joplin, there's a strong possibility something was involved....

Desiring a PS4 is human nature.

If you claim to not want a PS4, you are either lying or can't afford it. You want it because it exists.

You can't afford a job?

Me neither, it costes too much time.

Also, Jay, it's been too long! How's my favorite atheist friend?

If you have a tonne of disposable income, why not?

I have both the X1 and the PS4. The X1 has better games right now (outside of indies), but frankly neither one is worth buying right now if money is tight.

Why, indies are not regular games? Some of the best games I have played in my life were indies.

So your argument is: "XB1 has better exclusive retail boxed games at launch?", seriously?

The true is that PS4 has better/more games at launch, right now and would have even more in the future. Since the launch the PS4 wins at quantity and quality (the best scored metacritic exclusive game is on PS4 with Resogun, truth fact) + free games choice.

But, yes, ok, XB1 has more retail exclusive games at launch you are right here, but not sure modern digital gamers really care about that.

My argument is as stated - unless you have a large amount of discretionary income, neither console is worth the price of admission right now.

As already outlined in this thread, Resogun is clearly a good game.  It is also not even close to utilising the extensive capabilities inherent in the hardware we all have to pay an awful lot of money for.  I am inclined to believe that outside of the kinds of people who frequent these forums, the vast majority of the greater than 150 million people who purchase pricey home consoles care very much about the sorts of high profile big-budget titles they can purchase for their system.

ie: My friend and Playstation fan at work.  He HAS PLAYSTATION PLUS and had the PS4 pre-ordered before it came out.  I have told him about this past weekend's Flash Sale, the free games he can download, the PS3 games, the sales.  He STILL hasn't downloaded a thing.  It just never crosses his mind, I guess.  And he's one of those guys that keeps going on about "That Xbox can't do 1080, though!"  I'll ask him if it's okay to give you guys his Playstation ID just so you know I'm not full of bullshit.

And of the several guys on my friends list with PS4s, only ONE of them even touched Resogun and it was for a very short amount of time.  That "Friends Activity" thingy on PS4 (and Xbox One) tells all.  The sad truth is that, while I'm playing Titanfall and looking for someone to play with, or while I'm playing Outlast, virtually all of my friends on both consoles are playing HULU Plus or Netflix.  Hell, most of my Wii U friends are doing the same.  And the vast majority of friends on all consoles are people I've met on gaming forums.

From experience, you're not missing much by skipping the 8th gen for now.  It's not where all of the excitement is.

That about sums it up.

As much as some gamers/posters like to get into pissing contests about resolution, the large number of publishers/developers capable of creating huge, immersive experiences have not fully (or in some cases at all) committed to the next-gen yet.  Even once they do it will take a while for projects to come online.  The result is that neither console has many of these experiences - the Xbox One has more, but not sufficient to justify the purchase in and of itself.

The further reality is that indies are indies for a reason - their appeal is narrow.  Sure there are exceptions (hello Minecraft), but for every indie that makes it big there are hundreds that don't.  Further, the overwhelming majority of these games can be played on a 5 year old PC - and that is not an accident.  They just don't justify the purchase of an expensive console to the vast majority of the console market.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

Wait for E3 to decide which console to buy.
I'm sure all 3 companies would have great shows.
