Forums - Microsoft - Major Nelson: 'PS4 vs X1 a marathon, not a sprint, we know what we have to do'

In a way the price drop in UK and some stores together with a free game makes them feel like the ones being in a sprint if you ask me. Anyways, this marathon and sprint statement applies to all consoles, they are at best in their 1st year (WiiU being a year and few months in) so i see no point making that statement. What they should try to do is make their console the best choice to play games in this generation and not focus on trying to beat them in sales margin. Sony isnt going to stay dormant because this isnt the end of the generation (its just the beginning)so they both have a lot of work to do.
"Bringing more than hype, bringing games". What was E3 all about in the first place?

He is right, this is a marathon, and PS4 will probably win arriving 1 year before the other competitors...

I think PS4 will dominate for a combination of factors. First of all it's Playstation, so it's gonna sell a lot more than a Microsoft console in Europe, Japan and the Other territories. But this time around, unlike PS3, PS4 was released at the same time as Xbone, and Sony didn't give MS the head start of 1 full year in NA and Japan, and 16 months in Europe! Also PS3 was so much more expensive than a 360 which already had a very solid line up since PS3 launched and also in 2008, where 360 was showing more games, better multiplatform games, and so damn cheaper. It was a better value than PS3 before 2009, when Sony had to 're-invent' PS3 with the cheaper Slim Model, and more and more available games and also better multiplatform ports compared to initial ones. This time around, Sony did all perfect with PS4, releasing it at the same time as One, no head start for MS, more powerful and friendly to develop for = better multiplatform games all along the whole generation, and you know how much the word of mouth is contagious; also better FPS like Call of Duty, Battlefield, Destiny, just to start with. This time around PS4 is so much cheaper than PS3 at Launch, giving the possibility to everybody to buy a PS4, unlike PS3 which was insanely expensive VS the insanely good and cheap 360, with so many more games available. Sony got stronger with PS4, MS got so much weaker with One, add the loyalty for Sony brand from all the Planet apart from NA and UK, and you have PS4 'domination'. Easy as that.

I would add that Sony have better 1st party developers, and they put more effort in developing new IPs, fresh concepts and ideas, more variety, and this helped to have many many players's loyalty.

This long-term stuff is kind of annoying... Having an early lead in something like this really benefits the one ahead. You can't just say "We'll take the lead later! But then there won't be enough time to sell more than Sony so...".

You shoulda know year(s) ago, now just dig a hole.

They don't need to worry if X1 sells like it's selling now (and with a profit). Sales are healthy, attach rate is good, there is no risk of any third party having second thoughts.

They may want to take the lead in the US for reasons of pride, but that is feasible any time. PS4 lead in US is small and isn't growing that fast either. If they cut the pirice they will retake the lead after one holiday season.

I haven't realized that XOne is manufactured at such a low cost, that it can cover all of its fixed costs by selling at a huge discount while at the same time giving away blockbuster games and annual subscriptions...

It is hard for me to believe that Microsoft had even a single dollar of profit from its March fire sale.

I really like the way MS talk right, all focus on games, looking forward to E3! PS fans should also be, happy, stiff competition is the best thing that could ever playstation IMO.

Discounts were limited in quantity and  time span, normally at $499 they are making a good profit. And the X1 console is less expensive to manufacture than PS4 because of the DDR5, they have more freedom to cut the price if they start selling kinect separately.

In the end winning is not that important, it is interesting to follow the sales for me but not that important...

I am pretty excited for E3 (never have been that excited for E3 and still 50 days to go)... and at the end of E3 I don't want to start a thread how sony won E3 and how MS is doomed, or how MS with game X will sell so many consoles..

I really hope I can start a thread after E3 saying thanks to Sony and MS for trying hard and bringing all this games..

And the esram that the XB1 uses off sets the cost that DDR5 vs GDDR3 has. So.... in that simplistic way of thinking, no. MS doesn't have more room to cut the price.

But hold on.... it gets more advanced then that. Since Ps4 is beasting and Sony is manufacturing WAYYYYYY more ps4's than estimated then the cost sony estimated of the ps4's is probably lower than expected.

But wait, there's more. MS has to have contracts with part manufacturers, warehouses, and factories. If they have a contract for lets say enough parts to make 20million Kinects... then what do they do with the remaining 15m? Break the contract? In that case they still need to pay for the 15m parts but they just wouldn't recieve them. Accept the 15m parts and let them sit around in storage wasting money? Just fulfill thier end of the contract and include kinect until the contract runs out?
