I don't know, I'm pretty excited for Mario Kart 8, and I've never EVER been excited for a Mario Kart game before!

For a comparison, I wanted to post some of the great and high profile games from 2007, the year in which all 5 consoles were on the market.

  • Assassin's Creed
  • Battalion Wars 2
  • Bioshock
  • Blue Dragon
  • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
  • Crysis
  • Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions
  • Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
  • Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
  • Halo 3
  • Heavenly Sword
  • Hotel Dusk: Room 215
  • The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
  • Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games
  • Mario Strikers Charged
  • Mass Effect
  • Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
  • Ninja Gaiden Sigma
  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Justice for All
  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribuations
  • Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
  • Portal
  • Project Gotham Racing 4
  • Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters
  • Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction
  • Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
  • Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
  • Rock Band
  • Skate
  • Sonic Rush Adventure
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • Super Paper Mario
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Uncharted: Drake's Fortune
  • Warhawk
  • The Witcher
  • Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure

That's a great year for gaming. We'll see if 2014 can match it.

Excitement of last gen?

Waiting for Lair? Heavenly sword, to finish it in 6 hours. That was 8 months after release already. Ratchet and Clank in October finally was worth the wait. Beginning of the year was Motorstorm, F1 championship edition, MLB 07 and Ninja Gaidan sigma.
Same for 360, Dead rising in August broke the drought.

Don't let those rose tinted nostalgia glasses fool you

Last gen was insanely exciting; in just it's first year the Wii changed the way games were played, 3D Mario and Zelda returned to greatness in Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess, and Metroid Prime 3 set a new gold standard first person shooter control.

There's been nothing on any of the three 8th gen consoles as exciting as any of those games yet.

Mario galaxy came a year after release, november 2007. MP3 August. TP was a Game Cube game. Sure Wii sports and Zack and Wiki (in October) were quite refreshing. Give it time, it's April.... Start complaining after E3.

I said "in its first year". Wii U's been out for longer than that and it's offered much less interesting games than Wii did. And being a GC game in specs didn't stop TP being amazing.

Native 1080p (ps4), 900p (xb1), and 720p (WiiU) isn't exciting to you?

Not really, no.

Games excite me. Pixel counts don't.

Nintendo is a bit on the lacking side true. 3D world was very good, just below mario galaxy, better than mario sunshine. Lego city undercover was great. But indeed Nintendo hasn't show any real reason for the gamepad, apart from letting your kids play on it while you watch tv or use a different console. Mario Kart 8 looks great though. I would have liked some puzzle game like Zack and Wiki making good use of the gamepad.

As generations move on it seems sticking with last gen's 'winner' is the worst strategy. The underdog produces the best games. MS and Sony both qualify for that atm. PS5 might be terrible again if PS4 keeps steam rolling as it currently is. Meanwhile Nintendo has had it's wake up call, this E3 might already be better.

What are you talking about OP? Last gen was nowhere near as good in the start as this gen.

For me, this generation just feels so much more conservative than the last; there's less innovation, less bold new ideas, less risks.

The gen doesn't really feel like it has begun yet with barely any next-gen only titles shown off yet, so there's that.

That said, this is WAAAAAY more exciting than the start of the 7th gen was imo. So fucking glad that gen is over.

5th gen was the worst gen overall, though. Exciting in many ways, yet horrendous in terms of actual games and hardware.

I think the ones voting 8th gen are going to be changing their tune in a few years. All gens start off slow. Yes even PS2 and PS1.

"These are the highest quality pixels that anybody has seen"

Is that poll even needed? The 2nd gen killed gaming. No contest.
