You're 40!!!! And for me to think I was one of the Grandpas on this site. ;)
Yea, it can be a pain in the ass when one of the kids wants to watch Disney when I'm watching something. But it's so nice to not have to play "find the remote" or open up the controller and find the batteries missing.
The Kinect functionality may not be for everyone. If you have absolutely no interest in the added functions of Kinect, the PS4 is an easy decision. For me though, having all the functionality in one place is really nice.

Luckily the batteries don't come out a ps3/ps4 controller :) The remote is indeed a problem, lost in the couch or dropped on the floor with the batteries gone. Remember to put it somewhere safe. There is always the WiiU gamepad to change the channel.
Kids are crafty, ours are 2 and 4 (I should have had kids earlier) and nowadays we wake up finding both kids in our bed with the tv turned on tuned into tree house. They could punch in the right channel before they learned to count.
I have everything routed through an amp, both hdmi and component video sources. The xbox one doesn't fit in the chain with 1 hdmi input. Nor would my wife approve of having another box in between. Luckily our able box remote can control the sound of my amp as well, saved the marriage! jk. XBox One's added search options are a nice idea, but so was TVii. We used that for less than a week before simply going back to the cable box menu. We actually asked our cable provider for a downgrade to the previous version of their menus as they respond faster with more channels per screen than the flashy new HD design. It's not perfect by far, searching for a particular program can be a pain. Still not annoying enough to use their 'smart glass' (it's just a browser page people) version that can do all that and program both our cable boxes over the internet.
In the end it's all about control. With a pvr we got some control back by recording what we like and skipping commercials. The writing is already on the wall with our cable provider's video on demand service. 'free' of charge for tv shows (should be for what we pay for cable in Canada) but they lock out anything except pause so you're stuck watching the commercials.
