Forums - Gaming - Xbox One And The PlayStation 4: Weirdest. Console. Transition. Ever.

I can only talk about how I feel about the new gen and there is a reason why this is the first gen since N64 where I didn't buy a console at launch and I could even include SNES which I got a few weeks after launch. I have absolutely no desire to own a new gen console right now because I see nothing I "need" it for (which will change with games like Destiny). Sure, loading times are faster and I can share my videos on Facebook now but that's not really a reason I need a new console for and the rest is only games I can also play on PS360 or PC or which are good but aren't that great to need a new console for (Killzone, Dead Rising and so on...)

I think another big reason is that I have my PC connected to my TV which I didn't have when 360 or previous consoles released. That takes away the "comfort" advantage I had with my consoles so that I preferred to buy games like Need for Speed on console.

I also don't find last gen games so ugly even with the new gen which I always felt with previous console generations. One reason could be that I play a lot of indie games nowadays so that I'm used to switch from great to horrible graphics in seconds and don't really find that odd.

But it is the most successful console launch Microsoft and Sony ever had

IMO, very similar to Super Nintendo and Mega Drive (Genesis) generation.

In all fairness, I liked Assassin's Creed 4 far and away much more than anything else released in 2013.  Was my GOTY, and it is the best game available on PS4.  I have been playing my PS4 and PS3 probably equally since release day.  XB1 does not get as much play time but Titanfall is absolutely amazing.  I was not overly impressed with Forza and Ryse was outrageously bad.  KI and Dead Rising are a lot of fun too.  Going through backlog plus Dark Souls, Stick of Truth, Yaiba etc. etc.  But in terms of weird?  I am not sure there is anything overly weird about this release.  They are always slow for first 6-8 months.  Most every game that has come out for the new consoles are decent releases.  Also, unlike many other new console releases there are no ultra noticeable technological jumps occuring at this time.  Such as 8 to 16 bit, SD to HD, Blu-ray vs HDDVD, console online gaming....nothing like that.  We are reaching a point where technology is starting to plateau a bit in terms of scalability and innovation.  Were you an adult during previous console releases?  They do not get released to the public with dozens of great games right out of the gate or even in the first couple months.  It has never happened.  The Borderlands on last gen only is a HUGE disappointment...I was incredibly surprised to hear that.  Here's to hoping Wolfenstein ends up being as good as the trailers are.

It'll probably stay like this until 2015. We'll get some decent games and PS3/360 will be getting Tripla A games as they call them, and then around 2015 is when most devs will make the transition. I just hope Persona 6 doesn't make us wait 5 years like P5 is.

It is strange, but the answer was pretty much summed up in the article. Developers spreading as wide as they can to lower risks.

yeah, i know.   not that there weren't cross gen titles last gen transition but it sort of feels like there are more of them now.

the worst part, imo, is that even of the "big" upcoming games (the order 1886, quantum break, ect.) we just don't even have release dates.  i'm guessing other than a few gap fillers we aren't going to see anything notable release until the holiday except for (maybe) watch dogs,.. another cross gen title.

The only upside imo is that the lack of releases makes people try out new games they wouldn't have otherwise, like inFamous.  But I think I made the right descision not getting a PS4 yet after getting a Wii U at launch and not turning it on for months at a time.

It all depends on your situation to me buying the PS4 at launch was the right move. I've already got a backlog filling up and that does not in anway include the indie titles just retail. Still working on beating Thief,Infamous, and Rayman Legends. Thief is espicially hard because I'm doing full stealth no one can see me and I can't touch anyone so it's taking a long time. I love it though I love hardcore stealth like that it's rare to see these days.

Then I also have BF4 that I'm playing inbetween the other two as well. I just don't have the sort of time some people do to play games. I only get one really good day to play for hours and hours and that's only every other week. The rest of the time I work and then I go home and workout. After that I have an hour max to play games. That's if I skip watching any of my TV shows.

I thought it was the safest console transition ever. It just feels like a continuation of the previous gen.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

Play INFAMOUS SECOND SON, it will change everything

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

The problem is the lack of new ideas...even "new" IPs like titanfall just take the last generation's mentality and wrap it in a new coat of paint (or a mech). This gen will be like the last, except remove all the feeling of freshness from franchises like Assassins Creed, Call of Duty and Uncharted.

Third parties have said that early in a generation is the time for new ideas but they have yet to live up to that promise. Indies are now the only ones who dare to try new ideas .-.

I see this get said at the start of every new gen since the ps1 days (Cant really remember much of the start of the snes gen) etc No new ideas, all the games are just the same as last gen with better graphics!! etc etc, This is nothing new as really this has always been the case.

Even the games you mention where nothing really new, Assassins Creed came from Prince of persia as it started development as a nextgen PoP game and pretty much added an open world structure nothing new there, Call of Duty 2 was the first CoD to release last gen but the was CoD games released on PC and Xbox1, PS2 and GC, And Uncharted came about from Tomb Raider and added gameplay mechanics from other games.

So really last gen just like every other gen was about taking good ideas from other games and adding them to your own imo.

So nothing really to complain about as the games will come once the gen goes on remember where only like 4 months into the release of both consoles and i have had some great time with my PS4 since its been got more so then i remember having with my PS3 and X360 at first as both of them consoles really didnt have anything on them for ages that was worth playing imo.

I have yet to see any game this gen that wasn't already done last gen and I don't see any in the pipeline either. I see what you are saying about previous gens and honestly, I wasn't really around for those, but I feel that last gen was very different from the PS2 gen in the mindset of how games were made. We will see in the future if this gen changes in any way but it feels like an extention of last gen moreso than a new generation.

Also, AC is still very different from PoP. AC is more based around large open worlds where PoP was about overcoming platforming challenges.

CoD evolved massively for the first title exclusive to last gen

Uncharted is focused on cinematic storytelling

Its not so much about the individual ideas, its about the attitude and feel of a generation. This generation feels like last generation. I am eagerly awaiting being proven wrong and it is too soon to make vast assumptions like I was doing...I stand by my opinion though

The other option is what generally happened in early console life cycles; few games at all.

It was not unusual to have month or two where nothing came out back then. So, if it is that or fill gaps with cross gen games I am content with the latter. If this generation goes seven years like I expect we'll have plenty of time to enjoy it.

Article isn't dumb at all. Both of these consoles were rushed to market.
