Forums - Microsoft - The Future of Gears of War, Killer Instinct and Rare from Ken Lobb - GoW 'innovative', Rare can choose what they do next

It would be good to see Rare go back to its old days, but given the talent left long ago, i wonder what the ones that stayed will be able to do. Both Kinect sports games reviewed poorly, despite the sales.

I hope now that we know their next project is of their choosing they will do something great. I guess since they had a few misses they stuck with what they felt worked. I know people that thought Viva Pinata was a fun game but would never want it to show up on their games played list. I would love to see them revisit Conker or another ip in their catalog.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

I really want to be optimistic. I admire Lobb a lot and I love what Rare accomplished during its glory days. But it's hard to get excited about an unknown commodity like Black Tusk and it's hard to trust Rare, which has turned out a lot of pedestrian games over the past ten years.

But I was always lead to believe that MS destroyed Rare by forcing them to make Kinect games against their will?

I wouldn't say there is any one reason they were "destroyed", but they're certainly a shadow of their former self.

I disagree.  Viva Pinata and Kameo last gen is some of their best titles.  Kinect Sports isnt what i want them to make but i will say without a doubt that I was happy with what Rare Ltd made last gen.....Well except for Nuts & Bolts.  I wouldve preferred a traditional BK, but it was good for what it was.

I'm talking in the present tense. Not saying they are bad, just that they are a shadow of how good they used to be. We are talking about the guys who made Perfect Dark, Golden Eye, Killer Instinct, DKC, Star Fox etc. Now the best game i can think of from them from the last gen was Viva Piñata, which came out back in 2006 and 2008. In the last 5+ years all they have made is a mediocre Banjo game and some lackluster Kinect games.

If that isn't a perfect example of a company that's become a shadow of it's former self, i don't know what is.

It'll be interesting to see what Black Tusk's turn around time on a new Gears game is like.

New consoles, hopefully that means new assets. I'd be concerned if they managed it too quickly, because the first thing to be compromised would be the length of the single player campaign.

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

I can't put into words how excited I am for a new Gears. I haven't played Gears since 3 in 2011-2012 so it will be a good amount of time before I get my hands on another Gears experience. I was burnt out on last gen when Judgement released.

It will be MS's big Fall 2016 shooter and Fall 2015 will be Halo 5. That gives Black Tusk almost 3 years dev time for a new Gears which is plenty.

I'm much more excited for new IPs. I've played 3 versions of Gears already, the story went to crap and after that I realized that the gameplay wasn't that great.

MS major exclusives lost the creative minds that made them and are basically doing was Treyarch and the new Infinityward is doing, trying to replicate the past which is boring. But I'm sure it looks great for investors having established franchises but for gamers the creative minds behind them are already gone.

Guarenteed COD would be a much better game is the original guys still had the franchise. Same with Halo 4, in fact, Halo could have been the most revolutionary FPS in years if it was more like Destiny.

Gears of War... My first next gen experience of gen 7... Show us what you've got Black Tusk. Uncharted 4's gonna need a real competitor!

*crosses fingers for a new Conker game*

I agree with you. Even Nuts & Bolts, although it wasn't a traditional BK, it was a very good game.
