I think it's been well known for a few generations that the main pull for Nintendo hardware is indeed Nintendo software.
Nintendo are doing a good job of selling the Wii U with what is available to them from 3rd parties. Nintendo software can only do so much though when the hardware and/or controller has drawbacks and 3rd parties are trying to avoid it like the plague.
Consistent, quality support is what sells a videogame system in the long run. Nintendo alone cannot offer consistent, quality support. They simply dont have the resources.
With what they have on the market right now and what they have in the pipeline, I think they're doing about as well as can be expected, considering the circumstances. Can see the Wii U breaking 10 Million this Year with a pricecut and the right software in November/December.
