Being lit doesn't mean it's not a repetitive texture.

I suppose coming off from playing mostly Wii or 3DS games, MK8 must look absolutely amazing.  A clear generation jump for Nintendo fans.  Coming from PS3 or 360 they don't look next gen.

But it's not a single colour.

We've had multiple colours in games for some time :P

Why are we calling incremental improvement on Gen 7 quality the new "amazing"?

I´m playing PS3 games since 2008 /09.

This is the bestlooking "cartoony"-game on every system. (before someone posts TloU....a game you literally can´t compare to Mario Kart in any way or form)

The last few posts have been a bit odd. For clarification:

The textures shown are not solid colors. They are patterned, and some look solid from far away. But this has nothing to do with the amount of power required to display these textures.

No one said the textures were not "repetitive" as far as I can tell. This also has nothing to do with the power required to render these textures.

I have limited knowledge of these technical things, but I'm pretty sure what matters are the size/resolution of the textures.

For the record, I prefer simple textures in fast-moving games. I find detail-heavy textures distracting and sometimes ugly when they're moving past you so quickly the details all blur together.

Bonzobanana claimed there  were "huge areas of single colours".

And I call it amazing because it looks amazing.

Probably the closest you will get on last gen is Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed.

Watch from 7:00 on if you don't care to watch all of it.  Tell me if you don't think it looks very similar in effects and style.  I think MK8 is better looking than this Sonic racing, but incrementally so.  Oh and the reviewer says it's more fun than MK at around 8:00.

On Gen 8 consoles, amazing would be matching the graphics in the pre-rendered intro of this game @ 20:00.

I've Sonic Racing games extensively. On PS3/360 they run at 30fps with frequent dips into the low 20s, plenty of screen tearing, and on 360, at sub-HD.

MK8 will be 720p/60fps with v-sync, count on it.

@ICStats

Sonic & All Star Racing Transformed runs at 30 FPS with dips to low 20es and it is Sub-HD, it has screen tearing that indicates that framerate is even lower than it seems. Mario Kart runs at rock solid 60 FPS even inlocal two player multiplayer without any visual downgrade and we didnt even mention higher resolution textures, more detailed character models and S&ASRT has player cap/limit of 8(right?!)?! Mario Kart 8 has 12 or maybe more... Also you really annoy me with your confirmation bias and just because one guy said that S&ASRT is better than MK does not mean that it is a fact and everyone have different tastes so just because opinion of that guy is what you want to believe dies not mean that it is a fact.

This^ And even then Sonic Racing looks much worse then MarioKart8 videos, especially offscreen/gameplay ones.

TLOU shots you use are either bullshots or taken from ingame CG/Cinematics that runs on a aeperate engine like in Yakuza and Devil May Cry games and not in actual ingame enviroment and likely those GOW shots are also from cg/cinematics... I played both of these games at my friends birthday... TLOU and GOW might look “realistic“ but Mario Kart 8 characters have better quality textures(higher resolution/more detailed and little to no compression artifacts) also I am sure that characters in Mario Kart 8 exceed in polygon count by a good margin when you see how well rounded are those models. A nearly perfectly round ball contains 968 polygons(22*22=484*2=968) and I counted that in my head and Mario in Mario Kart 8 has most likely 25000-30000 polygons without the kart. With kart it would add another 10000-15000 or more depending on model being used... Do not forget that mustaches and hair of Mario are animated too so it is more demanding than most characters on HD twins.

LMAO, what a load of shit. TLoU and GOW3 dont have CGI, all ''cinematics'' are done in in-game engine. I'd post a gif of Ellie's cutscene and in-game face to show the comparsson but I cant find it.

And how the fuck is Mario's character more detailed??? Its a cartooney generic 3D model only with sub-HD textures (welcome to 2006), its basically a Wii model mario only with higher resoultion: There is no impressive 3D detail to be found in any cartonney game.

As for that polygon count, if you cant support that with some actuall evidence and data, its completly useless. ''I counted in my head'' is a laughable source in these forums, regardless where they come from.  We dont even have the resolution for the game figured out (cuz, you know, this is Nintendo) but you already figured out the specific polygon count for characters with and without karts?
