Machiavellian and lucidium, take it to a pm. Thread doesnt need a pointless back and forth like that where nothing is coming from it.

Liar gets perma banned?, you willing to go through with that Machiavellian?

Wouldn't say no to a staffer being able to confirm for future use.

Nope, have no problem at all but I did say I was not going to respond back to this type of message :)

Looks interesting...would love to see it properly used in games in the future.

Of course. Games sell far more physical copies on consoles than they do digital. Hence "heavily favoring physical media".

Until a stable streaming service arrives or games suddenly becomes a lot smaller, it's likely going to stay favored towards physical copies for several more years. Pricing also needs to improve.

PC is the only place we've seen it swing heavily towards digital, but that's largely thanks to the convenience of downloading on a PC and the great services available for it both is quality and pricing (aka steam :p).

Well, I would say phones and tablets are about as pure digal as we have.  I don't think there is really any physical games for those devices.  If there was it woudl be very rare.

As most of people here are growing up in the information age, I'm still not understanding how they can not graps the value of this off sight processing.  Nvidia has shown it too.  Some of the processing is done of the severs, then the final reder on the local machine.  Small amounts of data are actually exchanged, so the stream back and forth isn't so big.  The server can calulate where are the object (like falling pieces) and send them to the local manchine to process. It's not 40gb a second at all.   Heck I used to play World of Warcraft on a dial up.  And it worked.

I was talking in regards to gaming, not technology in general (I figured that was obvious considering where we are and the topic at hand). Gaming has always been several years behind the tech of other industries, since it revolves around software more than the tech itself.

I'm not downplaying it's value, I'm simply pointing out it's quite a few years off. This is a prototype achieved under perfect conditions, and it still has multiple flaws. We still have ping issues on MP for goodness sake, even with dedicated servers :P We aren't suddenly going to have calculated physics. There are multiple hurdles that need to be crossed before this tech will be reliable enough to used on a wide scale. Outside of simple uses such as AI or more precises target locators, i doubt we will see that wide spread use for quite a while.

No idea what you are talking about with 40GB/s though o.O I never said anything like that. He asked me "really?" to me saying that gaming on consoles currently heavily favors physical media, and i said of course it does. The only way people are going to suddenly swap to digital is either games becoming smaller to download (it takes longer for most to download a 40GB file to their console than just go out and buy the game), or if we get a stable streaming service. Outside of that the transition will continue to be slow.

That's great, yet completely meaningless.

There has never been any doubt that graphics rendering calculations can generally be outsourced to other computers. Raytracing clusters have done this for decades.

The problem is, and has always been, that this has very little practical implications for real-world games.

Because even if not considering the problem of network latency/bandwidth etc. of real-world internet connections, there's still the problem that the actual amount of calculations necessary does not decrease, it's just being distributed differently: If, in this setup, a high-end PC managed to show the scene at about 2fps, while "the cloud" managed to achieve 32fps, then that means that the cloud computing resources required for this demo equalled to at least 16 equivalent high-end PCs. These resources cost money, quite a lot of it, that someone has to pay for.

So there's simply a huge rift between theory and practice when it comes to the "power of the cloud" for graphics: Relevant improvements are very well possible in theory - but unrealistic in practice, because no gamer would currently be willing to pay for the resources required to actually do so: Too costly for very limited improvements.

Care to act as a mediator and check out our credentials yourself?

Why? You are saying he is lying about what he does or lying in his posts? report them. Sounds well professional when you want someone to count the number of certs you have on a wall or letters after your name to win an argument.

Hes the one that started on about credentials, im simplying sick of people pretending to be "developers", so i called him out on it. - while being the one to bring up the topic of "proving" stuff, he was also the first to back down. regardless of that I've verified with mods regardless, so make of it what you will.

Nothing for me sorry. Certificates in frames do not substansiate all claims. Congrats to you tho if you think they make you more correct by default than someone else.

Edit - I don't mean to sound a dick to you sorry if it's coming off that way just when you call someone out for a permaban it seems very "pissing contest" to me. Not taking sides and I didn't read yer whole back and forth mate, just that end of it.

Who needs certificates in frames?, more to the point what certificates exactly, and if there were such certificates why in the hell would someone frame them?

It's simply a matter of accuracy and knowledge drawn from experience, wether or not that experience comes from actual work or imagination makes a dramatic difference to the outcome.

It gives me more experience, by default, than someone else unless of course that someone else is in the same field / experience level.

I don't shit talk a professional cook because i can make cheese on toast, for example, but hey if you think having a decades worth of experience on something doesnt give a person more accurate and reliable opinions on something then I really cant help you.

It's a moot point regardless as he's now gone ahead and proved his position as I did, so we'll continue the convosation in private.

If people with an internet connection get a better experience than those without on a single-player game, something is very wrong.

Exactly. And at what cost, and for what length of time? Would be a shame playing the most amazing game only possible with this technology, but after access to the service shuts down it ceases to be playable. Would really speed up the already visible transition of games from experiences which last decades into disposable media.

While I can see this being brilliant for a lot of medical, humanitarian and armed forces purposes on a global scale (with smaller, cheaper distributed units having access to a greater, centralised resource for greater computational power) as an innovation to gaming, it seems fraught with problems.

Interesting nonetheless.
