Well if that happened someone would acquire it. I think it's best on the hands of Nintendo.

oh no... will this one of THOSE threads? ^^
I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!
Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.
If Playstation were to become it's own company, it would enter many of the same markets and make many of the same mistakes Sony has already made.
I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016

I actually don't know... Which one is more likely to branch off? I don't think anyone would want PS alone; I think if this scenario would be believable, I think we have to assume the whole of SCE would branch off, right? How would want playstation without all the games?? |
They would have to be sold, they can't legally branch off.
Although, Playstation + SCE is profitable, it has some significant investments that Sony bank rolls with it more profitable ventures. Like Life Insurance. PS would definetly not be able to manufacturer a console much less all its fancy gadgets like move or morpheus, especially when its Sony whose developing that tech not PS. Whoever buys them could do it, but they would probably outsource it or just downsize PS.
Best case scenario, it wouldn't look like PlayStation but rather a series of games sold under that brand.
Worst Case it dissolves entirely.
It definetly would not look anything like Sega or Nintendo.
Its really a lose - lose situation, if not a lose - win stituation.
If Sony sold PS, it would be much worse for PS.

Wouldn't neccesarily have to be sold off. The TV division is branching off into a seperate entity without being sold yet. |
I meant it couldn't just be seperated by the division itself. The TV division is mutual.

This graph is actually showing that eventho the ps3 was selling quite well it made not so much profit

PlayStation alone wouldnt last long without significant changes to the "PlayStation Strategy".
On the other hand, if it was purchased by a Samsung, Apple or similar then it would continue to be the dominant brand. Possibly see massive growth thanks to increasing budgets and a better parent company.

I thought about that but I realized it wouldnt work.
Apple wouldn't price it competively at all, they would probably just encorporate the ips into their own devices so PS would as a brand would probably dissapear.
Samsung is on the opposite side of the spectrum, they are all about manufacturing tech consumer tech cheap and effeciently I don't think they would care for the investment that Playstation would take. Google, MS, and Facebook are probably the only companies I could think of with both the capital, know how to handle the IP and benifit from it. But honestly I think PlayStation is best handled by Sony.

It seems pretty unlikely it would becomes a shadow of its former self at the same time it was started to thrive again :P
In fairness though, many people believed the PS3 would be their last console, so i suppose the doom predictions being reduced to "a shadow of its former self" is a pretty good sign for their future ^^
