I think it's awesome. The last thing I want to see is a game i'm interested in also on previous consoles after I bought a new console.

I don't see why it matters if games are cross gen.

If you own a X1 or PS4 console, you have access to a version that's superior than 7th gen. That justifies your console purchase.

If it can fit on 7th gen then it technically isn't made for 8th gen now is it?

Nope, that logic is flawed. Just a few examples off the top of my head.

Witcher 2 was designed for the PC, but got a good port on the 360.

The Crysis series manged to raise the bar on PC graphics while still getting 7th gen ports.

Battlefield 3 and 4 are some of the best looking PC games, yet they got decent 7th gen ports.

Call of Duty games were designed for the 7th gen consoles, but Wii received solid ports.

A 7th gen port exisiting doesn't mean your 8th gen product has to be inferior.

Killzone:SF, Knack, Infamous:SS, Ryse and Forza 5 could have been PS360 games. They just wouldn't look or perform as well.

Am not sure why, there is a huge install base of 7th gen to be used, even probably with 100k copies would justify the port cost. Maybe the games cost more to port than they used to? I genuinely don't like how the costs in the industry are rising, putting more pressure on the developers to restrain from doing anything innovative and play it safe to avoid bombas. You don't need an unnecessarily huge budget to create a great gaming experience

A 100K for ports is probably not worthwhile. Otherwise Wii U would get more support.

I think PS360 versions of AC:U and Batman AK are going to happen. I don't feel they're quite prepared to cut off potential 7th gen profits for those series. Maybe they'll be handled by other studios and announced later.

devs surely wont mind but for publishers breaking even is just a waste of time and manpower.

This is just apart of the transition to next gen

Cevat Yerli of Crytek, specifically stated they'd had to cut things from Crysis 2, because it would only work on PC.

Battlefield 4 on PS3/360 runs at what would be low settings for PC.

Call of Duty games have been running on an engine that was originally created for what, CoD 2?

Infamous SS, Killzone, Knack, Ryse, Forza 5 etc... as they are now, would not be able to work on PS3/360, as their resource requirements are at least 5-10x that of those consoles.

I'm not saying you can't still make good games for 7th gen hardware, but including them in the equation when making new games for 8th gen, will kneecap the functionality, performance, draw distance, loading times, character models, particle effects, etc...  basically everything but story would be lessened.

I can't remember any previous generation where there were quite so many cross gen titles as there currently are. Isn't the idea to make the new consoles more desirable by providing unique experiences ?

Honestly I'm glad. Devs used to do nothing but complain about how 7th gen was holding them back so they damn well better work on 8th gen only titles.

I'm actually shocked more devs are releasing last gen ports. I could be wrong but I don't remember this happening before. When PS2 launched, we didn't see a port of say, MGS2 on PS1. We didn't get Gears Of War on the first Xbox etc.

Maybe it's a sign that next gen hardware isn't nearly the leap it use to be.

Uhm. We did get last last gen games on 360:

NFS MW 2005

Burnout Revenge

King Kong

PES6

and a bunch of other games from the PS2 gen.

By the time PS3 came out, it was already 1 year into the new gen, most devs already moved on.

This time it's no different.

What if you make the 8th gen version first without compromise, then make the 7th gen versions with dialled down visuals?

I think you missed the point.

PC games like Crysis, BF3/4, and Witcher 2 are great examples that fantastic looking games can be scaled back and play well on 7th gen specs.

Visuals and maybe some features get scaled back on 7th gen consoles, but gameplay itself is mostly true to the original.

Infamous SS, Killzone SF, Knack, Ryse, and Forza 5 are visually impressive. But much like Witcher 2, Crysis, and BF4, they could be visually scaled back and have the gameplay MOSTLY intact on 7th gen platforms.

Quite frankly, GTAV is more technically impressive than any of the games mentioned.
