Forums - Gaming Discussion - Will MS buy the Oculus Rift tech to compete in the VR space?

Will MS buy Oculus Rift

Yes 14 9.33%

No 102 68.00%

Maybe 33 22.00%

Total:149

To be honest I think one of the things that will push VR to take off is porn, and Sony/MS will not work with the porn industry. As such Occulus is better off staying with a PC approach.

Why bother, it can be just as easily implemented on Xb one if it stays as a third party peripheral. And unlike Sony MS wouldn't have to try to make it profitable.

I think at the moment it's PC only. MS will have no control in deciding if it goes to consoles or not.

The problem is that VR COULD be the next big thing and can MS afford to not have a chunk of the VR pie? Sony have an advantage of using tech that they already have been working on for years to make VR work (Move controller tech). MS seem to have ventured very little into VR.

The OR guys have said they have no interest in consoles, it wouldn't make any sense. If they're getting bought by anyone it's going to be Valve, but that's also unlikely.

But if MS bought them out, that stance would change.

You know they have to want to be bought out right? Microsoft can't just buy them on a whim. They've stated that consoles are too weak for their tech, why would they agree to a buyout?

Sony has been tinkering with virtual reality for a while. Since 2010 they have been working on project Morpheus, a VR headset that works with the PS4. With not much coming from Microsoft in the VR field, it's possible that they could buy Oculus Rift to get uo to speed.

There's also rumors that Sony has been trying to snap up Oculus Rift with could be a move to improve their VR tech or simply a move to buy out the competition and/or prevent MS from buying it.

No, they wont buy oculus rift because it is pretty much guaranteed that they have been working on their own vr tech for quite some time.  There have been rumors for years, leaked documents, etc.  in fact, vr is probably a big reason kinect is bundled with every system.

Microsoft and probably also companies like Samsung, Apple and whatever have probably all already VR tech since years in the works. Billion Dollar companies don't miss stuff like that at least after they saw how Oculus got so much attention. Just look at the leaked Microsoft documents, when Sony started with it and when Oculus started as project on Kickstarter. Pretty much all close dates to each other.

It is possible that they will never release a device if they see that others fail with their products or that they buy something like Oculus because their own headset doesn't work that great but yeah, Microsoft and all other big tech companies will surely have own stuff in research since years.

Money talks! If the price is right they would probably sell no matter if their original plans doesn't match the buyers. Plus if the OR tech is too powerful for consoles then it can be adapted. MS probably still release it on PC and have the sister version for the X1. Think of Gaikai. They weren't looking to be bought out but Sony coughed up the money and took Gaikai a different direction.

I'm sorry but reality isn't the same as a fantasy world where everything is for sale. I mean sure you can argue a price for somethings, but It doesn't matter how much money you have if its not for sale.

You are right but how far away are they from getting a consumer ready device from R&D to stores with supporting games? It could be years away and if they want to get a device out sooner, buying OR will give them a huge boost.

If MS also sees VR as the future then they can't let their competitors get a big lead over them.
