Yeah, you are right, I'm not a good judge of his overall work.

What I was thinking about is his big talk about japanese AAA, western AAA games, like "I wanted to show people that Japanese high-end games are still worth playing and that big Japanese games still have a future." and it's always about the very same serie he defined 15 years ago and where he can take lots of resources just based on his and his license name. That's one of the few problems AAA japanese game has : a shrinking range of licences coming from the PS1 area. Let's say I think he's overrated when it comes to talk about japanese gaming future, solution and AAA.

The average gamer easily says things like this.

Most of those making comments online have absolutely no idea how much blood, sweat and tears go into making a single videogame. How many hours a day do you think he spent making Metal Gear Solid 4, and over how many years?

How many people quit the industry after Super Mario 64 because of burnout? It's tough work.

And you say:

"He's mostly doing the same licence once every 4 years for about 20 years. "

This is what he's actually done:

1980s: Penguin Adventure (MSX), Metal Gear (MSX2, NES), Snatcher (MSX2, Sega CD, PC)

1990s: SD Snatcher, Metal Gear 2 (MSX2), Policenauts (PC, 3DO), Tokimeki Memorial Drama Series, Metal Gear Solid (PS)

2000s: Metal Gear Solid 2 (PS2), Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS2), Zone of the Enders (PS2 and Anime), Boktai: The Sun in Your Hand (GBA), Boktai 2 (GBA), Metal Gear Acid (PSP), Metal Gear Acid 2 (PSP), Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3), Castlevania: Lords of Shadow (PS3, 360, PC), Metal Gear Rising (PS3, 360), Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (PSP)

Other stuff:

  • Lost Warld (1986: MSX, canceled) – writer, director
  • D2 (1999: Dreamcast) - thanks
  • Stock Trading Trainer : Kabutore (2006: Nintendo DS) – producer
  • Kabushiki Baibai Trainer Kabutore! Next (2007: Nintendo DS) – producer
  • Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008: Wii) – designer of Shadow Moses Island stage
  • Twelve Tender Killers (2008: mobile phones) – producer
  • Gaitame Baibai Trainer: Kabutore FX (2009: Nintendo DS)

Yeah man, according to industry standards this man sure isn't spreading his wings /sarcasm

The fact is that he is allowed to "talk big" just as much as anyone else on the planet. Yet people with less than 1% of his credentials get upset when he says something bold. The man has worked very hard and knows what he's talking about.

He can tell whatever he want the same as your or me, I just really hate him presenting himself as different or even an example for Japan. He made 11 MGS, a serie that started a long time ago that's his only known AAA, for a company dying on the console market and that switched to the mobile market. And noone can have the fantastic budget he have for MGS in Japan, except for a selected few licences, so he's not even an example.

But I would be interested about is opinion about what is wrong in Japan dev, but the only thing he says is how great and big is his only AAA.

I would be _really_ interested, because the only thing I ever read from him is the bullshit PR about creativity and common knowledge about the switch to smartphone game. But what I see at my office (smartphone dev in Japan and contact with a lot of people coming from console game companies) is an extreme inefficiency in dev, inhability to speak in english that prevent any use of international proven tools and website, an over extreme attention to details that inflates the budget to no end and stretch dev time and cost for a very limited result when our tooling is so primitive, insignificant specifications, in-house full custom and extremely expensive dev for about every game (the way he does in fact with a in-house custom engine different in MGS 4 and 5 in the same console), etc. and people that have no idea what they talk about and produce nothing but enjoy the fame of a god of dev.

How can you claim that a game is overrated if you HAVE NOT PLAYED IT? You admit that you have not purchased The Last Of Us but you still claim that the game is overrated? This is the shit that i'm talking about.

People, you have to PLAY A GAME before you rate/review it. He also admits that he hasn't even really played the Metal Gear Solid games but still caims that they are overrated. You cannot play a game for 5 minutes and determine if it's overrated or not. You have to play it fully or atleast play it for 10 hours to get a good grasp of how the game is.

There can be games you might not have played that are overrated in your opinion and that statement would hold true.  If you've only played one God of War or one Call of Duty, your opinion would be partially correct because the other games in the series are mostly the exact same.  Same gameplay, games play through the same way, etc. If you've played Demon's Souls and disliked the game.  While Dark Souls is a connected world, that's the main difference, so you could call that game overrated because it very similar, almost exactlty like its predecessor.

So there are games you don't necessarily have to play before you can accurately come up with the opinion that they're overrated to you.

If it's a new IP, a game you've never played, etc, then no, you really can't say it's overrated without playing it enough to know if that's what you think, but not 10 hours.  You don't need to put 10 hours into a game to know whether the game is for you.  Some games you might.  Some games like Dragon Warrior 7, Star Ocean the Second Story, etc, actually take two hours before you get into the gameplay, and you need to put in atleast a little time into the gameplay itself.  Most games however, you could put in four hours or less and have a good idea on what the rest of the game is going to play like.

I think that the games should be played atleast long enough for the player to gain access to every gameplay feature available.  Tales of Graces F you have to play the game for a period of time before you even get access to the B Artes.  You're missing out on half of the gameplay with the limited amount of A Artes and lack of B Artes if you don't play to where your characters become an adult.

So the time thing is really on a game by game basis, but four hours is more than enough for you to gather a good opinion on most games.

As far as ALL of the Sony 1st parties being overrated that's a no but there are quite a few that are such as naughty dog but they pretty much have being deserving of the hype lately thus far because of the last of us sales show us that they ain't exactly all bark and no bite.

Yeah, if you haven't tried the game you shouldn't talk about it either really.

Now, I've played Uncharted 1 & 2, and I don't get all the hype to those games, but I wouldn't say that The Last of Us is overrated just because of that.

But I do get what he's saying about Kojima. All that man does is Metal Gear, so I don't understand the hype surrounding him. Granted, I haven't played any Metal Gear games (mostly because I can't stand that long cutscenes!!), so I wouldn't say he's overrated, only that I don't get the hype.

I agree I played Uncharted and was extremely disappointed. Not because I expected to much (I always play games expecting the worst so I wont get disappointed) but because I wasted way to much money on a meh game. (TombRaider 2012 was far better IMHO because it shows young Lara struggling and getting stronger etc. and not a goofy average joe sunny boy whos completely unsympathic) ... I also never liked Jak n Daxter either because of their characters and character design (imho Ratchet n Clank is waaaaaaaay better).

I really would like to play TheLastOfUs tho but because NaughtyDog is so overrated I wont be able to try the game before it drops to 20 bucks. (not going to waste more money on ND games. TLoU might change that but unless I play it I will stay sceptical)

Also dont get the Kojima hype. Actually I dont get any kind of hype because the hype starts before the game comes out and noone knows how it will end up like... Do people have glass balls?

@ Poll    yes everyone can determine if a game is overrated by just looking at how people hype it up. If people praise it as the best thing ever without giving examples on why it is better than something else then it is just overrated.
Stuff like COD is also totally overrated and noone can deny that.
Playing the game will just help you get a better understanding and give you details and information on HOW much overrated it is.

hahahahahahahahahahahahhahhahha that took 5 mins in the game to accomplish after her"shocking" reaction to killing her first person to then a total killing rampage driving a climbing axe into peoples head etc ! ha i would take drake's more realistic way of thinking and moving !

Please note Tomb Raider was a excellent game but your reason for sayin its better than uncharted is utter nonsense

WRONG you either never played the game or didnt understand it  try again and this time dont focus on her boobs.

If he said he doesnt like any of them, then its fine but saying they are all over-rated is silly.

I dont like a lot of MS and nintendo games but I wouldnt say they are ALL over-rated, because in a lot of situations, the critics agree with me and have not rated them too highly...and they have done the same with sony games too.

First of all its baiting threads like this that lower the level of these forums. I struggle to understand why you do this. Is it for the points?

Second, who cares about the opinion of some random guy on youtube and why should we care?

Third, i have finished "the last of us" and i think its overrated, or to be more precise, incomplete and unfocused. People still drop on me like hungry hienas because of it. Though i agree that if you havent played it its difficult to accept the criticism, perception is a vital component of every product, and it shouldnt be ignored, but factored in on the analisys.

First, Umm no, you're just exaggerating and being overly sensitive that's what that is

..the fuck do you mean you "struggle to understand why i do this"? What is it exactly that i'm doing?

And i made it maybe because I WANTED PEOPLE TO COMMENT! *shocked face* I don't give a damn about any stupid ass points.

And how is this a bait thread? Who exactly am i baiting? You actually felt some type of way about this thread? SMFH

I think you might need to stop living on the internet, Nem

Second, it's about people claiming that a game is overrated before playing it. That random guy was just the inspiration behind making this thread

Third, that's just your opinion, bro

Lol maybe you didn't "understand it" then as he put it, ya know cos it was so deep! I really like those deep thoughtful moments in games where you're going down a steam fast and your head gets impaled on a metal spike, really gets you thinking.
