Forums - Nintendo - Does "difficulty" make Nintendo games great?

spurgeonryan, how about you take everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt rather than the absolute truth?

Different people play different games for different reasons. If you just look at Super Mario and Kirby, they are both platformers, but Kirby doesn't really have any difficult jumps (Kirby can fly at will, after all). So Kirby's ongoing popularity is definitely not rooted in difficulty. Or take your perception of Zelda which you think of as having challenging difficulty. Others would say that hasn't been the case in a long time which shows that difficulty is in the eye of the beholder and a very subjective thing.

So what makes Nintendo games great, if opinions can divert so much from each other and reasons to play video games can be so different? It is the overall polish which usually allows the games to age like wine; and polish matters regardless of the reasons why someone plays a game.

People play Nintendo games that were made before they were born and think they are great. Nintendo games are usually not a flavor of the moment thing, but eternal. And that's what makes them special, because there aren't many other developers out there who work on the same or a similar level. Visual fidelity does have an expiration date while game design and polish do not.

Do you know how hard it is to play with a wrong absorbed skill?

Really? That is all you got from his message?  Or that is your only rebuttal: that a specific game is indeed hard?  Again, like Rol said, the greatness comes from the polish and commitment to quality that Nintendo employs.  The difficulty level of each of their games represents that polish, but doesn't define their greatness.  As someone posted before, Animal Crossing and Kirby's Epic Yarn are some of the easiest games I have ever played.  But the level of quality of those titles is impeccable.  While the graphics may not be what you would call amazing, the execution of those graphics is superb.

Again, if you say yes, then you are missing Rol's excellent point and answer to the question you have raised.  I'm sure you do find Kirby difficult and that might have something to do with you being a younger gamer.  But that is not why we like Nintendo games.  We like them because their worlds generally don't glitch out.  You can tell that the creators of the games are craftsmen (women?) who have honed their game making skills to prcesion and who don't like to send out games before they are ready, knowing that a patch will fix all the bugs.

Don't you remember kirby007? Infamous troll with the longest list of alternate IDs on VGC. It's so bad that he makes deals with the moderators: They will listen to his suggestions in exchange for him revealing a few of his idle accounts.

Oh damn, I do.  Honestly, I have to scroll left and right on this monitor to read entire threads and thought I was responding to spurgeon.  I've got trollegg all over my face.  Thanks for the heads up.

Hmm maybe if I'd saved those I could have traded tham in for mod status!

Games are always about difficulty for me, not just Nintendo. The more challenging the better, even if it's the same stuff over and over again that I can improve more and more; that's actually gaming to me, just remember how arcades work(ed).
Yoshi's New Island is probably "bad" because it was a difficult game on the SNES, it wasn't easy to 100% it. Nintendo is going the easy route with lots of their games nowadays which upsets some people, and I'll be honest I don't play them as much because of their low difficulty.

And as stated before, yeah, different tastes :) so I won't say a game sucks because it's easy, just that I don't put it on my favourites list.

I like Nintendo games for their fluid gameplay and creativity. In terms of difficulty, they are even a little too easy for my taste. But most of the time you get soe extra challenges to motivate you a little.

I'm a little disappointed with Ninty's output in the last couple of years, but they still made some of the best games of all time. Some even defined whole genres until this very day. That's why I like Nintendo games. They offer something fresh while delivering stupidly great gameplay. I don't know nor do I care why other people like or dislike the games.
