Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony Pictures Shutters Interactive Division, Prepare to announce layoffs in Studio Operations

I am a fan of all the gaming companies. So why would I care about the financials of any of them???? As long as they make enough money to keep making me more games and HW I am fine with however much they make.

Where in your source does the word "massive" appear?

In his defense, it is hard to read and masturbate at the same time.

How do you know this Badge? From experience??  ^^ =P

Other sources report the number of laid off employees at 1,000.

The company's solvency is important, but this is a 'Sony news' section. (Interactive division is completely shuttered in this news, by the way).

Large sales of the console, at a loss for each console.

They make money back from accessories (Dualshock 4, PlayStation Camera, PS4 stand etc) and from sales of software (games). Pretty sure they're doing fine in the console business, didn't they report a profit last quarter for it? I think so.

Oh, for sure. Their video game business is definitely one of the stronger divisions of the company. But it's unfortunate that they aren't posting a profit for each system, as they are in dire need of cash. They are successful, but it's unfortunate that the console sales don't contribute to a solution directly, but rather only obliquely by being a doorway to the profitable Playstation ecosystem. I'd rather they make a little pile of change on each of those millions of console sales, and not need to layoff good people, than the way things are now.

Wow, amazing how quickly people are impugning my motivations or tone. I'm sorry Sony is in such dire financial straits and are forced to keep laying off people from their divisions, including the gaming division. I feel sorry for the hard working individuals who are put out of a job because of the company's money-losing strategies. But acting like I'm a jerk for posting this news here or that I'm somehow happy that innocent people are out of a job is uncalled for. This is news that ought to be reported, and insulting me isn't helpful.

How is what I say uncalled for? Sony sold major buildings, including their original headquarters, closed over two thirds of their US retail locations, laid off a huge amount of one of their game studios, and then a couple weeks later, this is announced. And they are still posting a multi-billion dollar loss for the year, while their hit video game console loses them a small amount of money for each system sold. Why exactly should I sugarcoat this for people who don't want to hear it?

Nothing wrong with reporting the news, its just that your insight is lacking.  Many already said your specific pointing out of Sony fans, the second is that Kaz has had Sony in rebuild mode going on two years now.  If he feels that the company is too large in its current state (and it is for the business its doing 140k employees) i dont see what the problem is in addressing it.

Ladies and gentlemen if you want to see daily layoffs you can go to this site here:

http://www.dailyjobcuts.com/

Listed are companies such as sony who are laying off folks (well documented), you have Radio Shack closing a bunch of stores (also struggling), but you have company such as IBM, Intel and Bank of America, insanely profitable companies who are laying off people as well.  It cuts both ways  People are continuing to chapmion Sony do nothing about its problems and let their demise occur quicker, at least they are addressing some things.

Why would anyone celebrate this? I'm a Xbox and PC fan, but this is bad for people's lives and its bad for the gaming business.

The glow of his scented candles obscuring his computer screen probably didn't help much either.

OT: Sucks for those employees.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

the sony hater who wrote this article is clueless! Everyone knows that sony is in debt and restructuring is apart of the plan. This will cont well after this article and its getting old! Just because sony has the best selling console right now ppl are hating. Get some hater aid you seem thirsty!

Of course. I never just talk through my hat when it comes to masturbation.

I don't think I will like Sony going the way of Sega. For better or worse, I love the fight (not really a fight) between the big three. I love wondering who would sell the most consoles, but I always wanted them to all be successful. I was alright with the gamecube niche market but hated when I heard the Nintendo will go the way of Sega. Now that it's more likely Sony would go that route, I feel a since of fresh air (about time we get them to shut up). I'm not happy though.

that will never happen Sony would pull a Sega and just be a 3rd party developer.

In which case I look forward to the day when Microsoft buys timed exclusive DLC for Uncharted.

Ha Ha, you are holding no punches.
