It'll go mainstream in 2 generations. This one and the next one are testing waters.

I don't know honestly. But I don't think they need to sell a ton of them for it to be successful.

I've been thinking about it the same way I think about Sim racing gear. How many people play racing sims? How many of them use a wheel? How many of them spend upwards of $400 on a wheel? How many people buy designated stands or cockpits for there wheels?

I know people who have multiple TVs and PS3s just to play GT. I'm sure they could find enough people willing to spend the money of a VR headset to make it viable.

I don't have any fancy setup but I've still got a pretty good chunk of money into gear just for racing games. For $300 or so I'd buy one to use with GT.

Bet with Adamblaziken:

I bet that on launch the Nintendo Switch will have no built in in-game voice chat. He bets that it will. The winner gets six months of avatar control over the other user.

I have seen that argument pop a few times. Wether it suceeds as a porn device or not, it has no bearing on the videogame market for us. So, it would still be a failure.

I beg to differ. Porn and Disney were the deciding factors for BluRay dominance in my opinion. I'm sure there were many others but those two def made a difference.

It really isnt the same thing. To be relevant in the games market, it needs to sell software. And last i checked this isnt the porn industry. The thing isnt just a medium where to store data.

I think they will be reasonably niche item that will sell in a slow burning manner to enthusiasts, similar to projectors that are for home use.

So basically they will be the opposite of a fad which is suppose to appeal to the mass market, sell at a very high level and disappear.

there are a lot of people talking about using porn with these VR devices...

I don't think they'll become popular enough to actually reach fad status...

VR has been around for more than 20 years now, and it's not a fad, but for gaming it will remain niche at least for 8th and 9th gen, both specialized peripherals and computing power available in consoles and average PCs are still far from allowing to reach the level of comfort and immersion necessary to make it take off in entertainment, let alone from doing it at a price cheap enough to become mainstream.

It's too bulky to take off right now. Some people find most gaming headsets too be to bulky/heavy and those are held up by the top of yoour head. This thing will hang off your face.

4 ≈ One

Lets bear in mind a lot of people thought the kinect and motion controls were the new awesome thing and that it would be the future of gaming when in actuality it's nothing more than a broken gimmick. So we'll see.
