Forums - Nintendo - Aonuma Suggests Future Zelda Games Could Feature A Top Down View

I don't really care if it's top down or 3D, what I really want is one of two things: either they change up the basic Zelda formula itself, or come up with a fundamentally different story, or a mix of the two of course, like with Link's Awakening and Majora's Mask.

Mostly because DKCR was fairly limited (Diddy Kong help only). It wasn't "the whole package" as it were.

The disparity between 3D Land and World is larger than the disparity between DKCR and TF, definitely, but TF is a game in much the same vein.

but what is the disparity? You really didnt give any information. You just said they were different. World added a four player option and cat suit. DKTF added mroe characters.

World had more characters, more bosses, better level design, better music, more unique worlds (since so much of 3D Land is recycled content, only two worlds of 3D World is such), and just a general sense of excellence that 3D Land never grasped.

TF is more about the characters, i'll grant, but also the more dynamic camera angles and such in levels that make them feel more alive. I know i'm having more fun with TF than i was with Returns, though it's been a while since i've played Returns (not since very early 2011).

Wouldn't surprise me, I don't think Nintendo wants to spend a ton of money on the next Zelda because the userbase for the console simply isn't shaping up to be too hot and Nintendo's not making money as is. Right now a monster budget Zelda game is probably the last thing that want to finance.

A top down Zelda would be far cheaper to produce.

They probably can port it to the next-gen Nintendo portable too more easily which will probably be out around fall 2015 I think.

In theory that makes sense except for the fact that the game has already been in development for years and wouldnt make sense to scrap it and start over just because the install base isnt there. Also when u think about it Zelda is a rather consistant seller despite install base.

Legend of Zelda-6.51 on an install base of 61.91

Link to the Past-4.61 on an install base of 49.10

Ocarina of Time-7.60 on an install base of 32.93

Wind Waker-4.60 on an install base of 21.74

Twilight Princess-6.93 on an install base of 100.95

So even on an install base of 15 million its very likely Zelda can still sell 3-5 million.

all that sounds great. But that doesnt really come across in previews and ads, maybe you just have to play it to get it. But that brings me to my intial point. Are those the games Wii U needed right NOW. Cause unless you were a big fan of the older ones i dont see people plunking down the money for a console just to play them.

I'd like them to split Zelda to 2 directions, 2d and 3d, like they did with Mario.
Then 3d Zelda will be filled with puzzles, quirky talks, annoying fairy at your back... And 2d Zelda to have a huge world/s, a lot of items and things to do, huge set of dungeons... Like lbtw but bigger and better. And 2d Zelda should be more action based. (And much cheaper to make, of course)
Then I'd be happy and could get my Zelda fix not 1 time per 5 years, but every 2 years. Also some dlc to zelda adding new worlds/adventures (think nsmbluigi) will be golden also...

Top down would be stupid and primitive for any serious Zelda game. The Zelda franchise only realized its true potential with Ocarina of Time. Zelda should not be some sort of a retro series. Nintendo needs to move forward and make something that outshines all other 3D action games.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

I did say "needed" not from a business perspective. These were games that needed to be made for people who played 3D Land and Returns, as both deliver on satisfying old problems with those games.
