If you start the gen out giving every game 80+ scores, it becomes difficult to really gauge the gems that tend to come out later on in the release cycle. To be fair, before everything was obsessed with an 80+ on metacritic, 60-80 was viewed to be an "average game" instead of "crap." |
Have you noticed that on metacritic gaming scores are only in the green from 75%+ where as 60%+ makes a green Tvshow/Movie or Music Album. It's clear that even they know that gaming rating seems to now start around 40%, a mediocre game scores 70% and every thing else falls into the final 20% at the top, it's really impossible to tell what is a great game and when everything is rated so high.
I think it would be very hard to universally change this sort of rating system tho, if you were to take the full spectrum of scoring then the likes of Aliens CM should rate a 0% that is what it would score if that had been a movie or a tv series but since it's a game it scores a 45% on meta.... I mean... as tests go that is a Pass... its a D but still a pass for the biggest load of bollocks to be stuck on a disk and retcon utter shit into the first 3 aliens movies. Piss's me off a bit.
