Forums - Gaming Discussion - MS leaving the console race would be good for gamers.

Idealistically I do think ms has done more to hurt the industry than help, but I would love a sony hardware device with ms created software ie games and os, but I really dont want only one contender in the home console race as I think it would be worse for the industry than ms entering it in the first place

Yes. They've bloated this industry with their money checks to 3rd parties for exclusive content, dlc and even demos. 50m for gta IV timed exclusive dlc, imagine how much money they threw around last gen. Publishers expectations have changed and this has become common practice and actually they started to rely on this money. If MS leaves the money is gone too, there'll be a shock.

The other bad consequence was that publishers hurt their potential audience by limiting themselves.

People like to conveniently forget that MS pioneered console hard drives, a sophisticated online network made for consoles, and console indie games. Even little things like online apps and achievements. On the side, the extended universe/lore of Halo and the continued effort they put into it blows away any support Nintendo/Sony have done towards the lore of their own flagship IPs.

As history shows us, Sony staying and winning leads to competition being choked of opportunity. MS winning means competition can still thrive. PS leaving actually would be better for all of us, and frankly doesn't have the stable financials of the parent company compared to Xbox.

I don't believe it's good to have 2 choices... Just look at American politics. Competition forces companies to out do one another. It's a good thing.

Gamers haven't accepted Nintendo since 1996?... That's simply laughable.

American politics is such a mess because one party makes plans and the other party ruins them not because they are bad for the people, but just so they can make them look like an in-effective goventment so that they can get back in power only to have the same thing happen to them!

And yes, Nintnedo have been on a downward sprial since the NES.

I know you discredited the Wii for your own special reasons, but the third best selling console of all time is still the third best selling console of all time... Regardless of who buys it, or why they buy it.

It's discredited for reasons that shouldn't need to be dragged up again.  But since you asked,.

Yes it does matter, because that market is gone now.  the people that bought the Gamers bought the NES, fewer gamers bought the SNES, much fewer gamers bought the N64, a few gamers bought the Game Cube and almost no gamers are buying the Wii U.  That is a downward spiral.

The Wii was a one off and the Wii U is more than proving that.

The market is not gone: Nintendo abandoned it. Wii U simply proves that even Nintendo didn't really like developing games for the Wii and wanted something bulkier, but that's not what Nintendo-consumers want. The Nintendo that shoves their middle finger right in the industry's face is the Nintendo that conquers. The Nintendo that tries to go along with industries norms is the niche player you've described.

Their potential is far greater than either Sony or Microsoft, limited only by the size of their companies.

You what?!

Sony want to make money by selling art, Nintendo want to make money by selling fun, Microsoft want to make money.

Sorry, but that's utter crap.
Each one of Nintendos consoles has seen a big drop in users.  The market has lost faith in Nintendo and they have become less and less of a player each generation.

Nintendo never abondened gamers, gamers got bored of Nintendo.

Sorry, pioneered....done right.

Dreamcast....lol. PS2 needed memory cards. And Everquest......please. Like that was ever the go-to IP.  Come back when you have 2 short story collections, a dozen novels, 7 graphic novels, a encyclopedia, 2 Bluray releases, and a TV show in the works.

You're going to need to provide some evidenciary support on that. This whole "it's a trend if you just ignore the Wii" thing smacks of the kind of baseless goal-post moving that i thought VGChartz was smarter than.

OP.........

It would be one step closer to shitty android/mobile games taking over completely.
