Yes it does matter, because that market is gone now.  the people that bought the Gamers bought the NES, fewer gamers bought the SNES, much fewer gamers bought the N64, a few gamers bought the Game Cube and almost no gamers are buying the Wii U.  That is a downward spiral.

The Wii was a one off and the Wii U is more than proving that.

The market is not gone: Nintendo abandoned it. Wii U simply proves that even Nintendo didn't really like developing games for the Wii and wanted something bulkier, but that's not what Nintendo-consumers want. The Nintendo that shoves their middle finger right in the industry's face is the Nintendo that conquers. The Nintendo that tries to go along with industries norms is the niche player you've described.

Their potential is far greater than either Sony or Microsoft, limited only by the size of their companies.

Each one of Nintendos consoles has seen a big drop in users.  The market has lost faith in Nintendo and they have become less and less of a player each generation.

Nintendo never abondened gamers, gamers got bored of Nintendo.

You're going to need to provide some evidenciary support on that. This whole "it's a trend if you just ignore the Wii" thing smacks of the kind of baseless goal-post moving that i thought VGChartz was smarter than.

It's not about ignoring the Wii, it's accepting that it was 'lighting in a bottle', a special event that just can't be duplicated at will.  Once you accept that the Wii was a one off, every other console Nintendo have made follows the downward spiral.

The recent Wii U calamities may portray Iwata as a businessman who has lost his touch, but the system's struggle is the continuation of the downward spiral that was drawn more than a decade ago - one which it managed to avoid in recent years, but not escape.

In 2002, when major retail chains held fire-sales of remaining GameCube stock, and when a growing number of publishers pulled support for the platform, executives at Nintendo had a clear choice in front of them. Either compete with Sony and Microsoft on their own terms or find a new market entirely.

George Harrison, Nintendo of America's head of corporate communications at the time, said doing neither would have been devastating.

"We knew that direct three-way competition in the hardware space was not going to support Nintendo financially in the future, so something had to change," he told CVG years later.

"We knew we could probably never get that 80 per cent market share back, but we decided that there was a better chance if we went after a different audience."

"So Nintendo decided to quit the console race, at least in the traditional sense. Again, that gives us no reason to believe that Wii was a fluke. Wii was Nintendo rediscovering their true selves for the first time since the NES era, a rediscovery that got lost in the shuffle all too quickly.

To a certain extent Wii was lightning in a bottle, but there are certain underlying truths about game design that ignore the Hollywood-wannebe trends in the industry that were encapsulated in the Wii's success. Wii proved that the industry had no idea what its doing in the long run. Wii U proves that Nintendo themselves are reluctant to do what is needed to succeed (although if GameCube created the Wii, the lessons of Wii U can create something spectacular too).

Nintendo needs to "re-discover" their institutionalized philosophies and quit trying to listen to the self-destructive "industry."

What evidence is there that Wii was not a fluke?

True, the industry has not been great at predicting the long run.  Wii and DS rises were big surprises.  So were the subsequent declines for Nintendo.

The rise of smartphones and tablets was unpredicted too.  The iPhone idea had a lot of naysayers before it launched, and so did the iPad.  Now those sell in the billions and disrupt PC and gaming businesses.

The underlining point is past performance is no guarantee of future performance for a product class.  The iPod was king and now forgotten.  Nintendo struck gold on two devices in one generation, and now they struck rock.  They need to re-invent themselves again.  Easier said than done.

I don't know why they could stick with the Windows 8 Store, with games like GTA, why not go after Steam. It'll be more cheaper for the company.
